Getting to know Vanessa Escobar Canas

As a first-generation immigrant who was born in El Salvador during the Salvadoran Civil War, I feel very fortunate to find a new home in California, but the struggles of leaving behind your culture, history, and home are something that you forever carry with you. Nothing prepares you for migration, especially when you know that your parents left so much behind to give you a new opportunity. I am part of an uprooted generation, which is both a burden and a gift. Ultimately, this experience has taught me to be humble and compassionate. My experiences as an immigrant have also given me strength and purpose. I don’t define myself by the obstacles because I was raised by strong women and nurturing souls every step of the way. Receiving that early training is the reason why I genuinely believe that our connections with others and learning how to help each other as a community can make a world of difference in outcomes. My Education and Training My bachelor’s degree is from UC Santa Barbara, and I received my Master’s of Social Work from the University of Southern California (USC). I am a Licensed Clinical Social Worker (License #88907) and find fulfillment and passion in helping committed individuals find their strength. My training and experience include the following: Cognitive-Behavioral Therapy (CBT), Cognitive Processing Therapy (CPT), Psychodynamic Therapy, Narrative Therapy, Dialectical Behavior Therapy (DBT), and Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing Therapy (EMDR).

What should a new client know about working with you?

My philosophy on therapy. In a way, my background and early life, and difficulties prepared me for becoming a therapist. By nature, we thrive when we feel at ease with ourselves, and daily tasks can become more manageable. Goals become even more achievable and less daunting. We might not control what happens to us, but we can control the outcome of how we react to difficult situations. In therapy, we learn what’s beyond the symptoms by addressing the cause and empowering ourselves every step of the way. If you are here, it’s because you are already on the track to considering transformation. I welcome you and thank you for allowing me to hear your story because there is strength in allowing me into your space.

What is your typical process for working with clients?

What happens in the first session? Our first session allows you to ask me questions and start building the client-therapist relationship. We will discuss your goals and what brings you to therapy. You have the power to discuss anything that’s on your mind and feel comfortable sharing. Therapy is not a race but more of a journey to a destination in which you will build awareness, understanding, compassion, empathy, respect, and empathy toward yourself and others. We will move at your own pace in a safe and nurturing space. For some, this might mean short-term therapy, but it might entail a more in-depth commitment to long-term therapy for others.
