Vanessa Williams, LPC

Psychotherapist
SC
I am a psychotherapist specializing in trauma, attachment, and relationship patterns, with advanced training in developmental psychology and somatic, nervous-system–informed care. I work with individuals and couples who feel stuck in emotional cycles, disconnected from their bodies or relationships, or overwhelmed by past experiences that continue to show up in the present. My work is grounded in understanding how early life experiences shape emotional regulation, identity, and attachment across the lifespan. Alongside my doctoral studies in Developmental Psychology, I incorporate somatic approaches that help clients reconnect with their bodies, recognize internal signals of safety or threat, and move out of survival-based patterns. I integrate attachment-based therapy, Emotionally Focused Therapy (EFT), Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT), and trauma-informed somatic practices. This allows clients to not only gain insight, but also experience change at a nervous-system level. My approach is warm, grounded, and structured, helping clients feel emotionally safe while developing clarity, regulation, and secure connection.

What should a new client know about working with you?

Working with me is both relational and body-aware. I pay attention not only to what you say, but also to how your body responds—tightness, shutdown, urgency, or numbness—because these signals often hold important information about stress, trauma, and attachment needs. My style is calm, attuned, and intentional. I value emotional safety and pacing, and I am mindful not to overwhelm your nervous system. At the same time, I offer structure, reflection, and gentle challenge to help you move beyond insight into real, sustainable change. The somatic and attachment work I guide clients through is informed by the same principles I practice professionally: slowing down, listening to the body, increasing tolerance for difficult emotions, and building internal safety before change. This allows me to guide clients with clarity, empathy, and respect for how change actually happens. Clients who work well with me often want deeper self-understanding, improved emotional regulation, and relief from long-standing relational or internal patterns.

What is your typical process for working with clients?

Early sessions focus on creating safety, understanding your concerns, and identifying emotional, relational, and somatic patterns. We explore not only your history and goals, but also how your body responds to stress, connection, and conflict. This helps us understand where patterns live—not just cognitively, but physically. Sessions often include a blend of conversation, emotional processing, somatic awareness, and practical tools. You may be guided to notice sensations, breath, or shifts in your body as we explore triggers, attachment dynamics, or relational experiences. This approach helps regulate the nervous system and supports deeper integration of change. As therapy continues, we work toward increasing emotional flexibility, bodily awareness, and secure attachment—both internally and in relationships. Treatment is collaborative and adaptive, with regular check-ins to ensure the work remains aligned with your needs and capacity. My process emphasizes steady progress, nervous-system regulation, and long-term change rather than quick fixes or purely intellectual insight.
