Victoria Shumard, LPC

Victoria Shumard, LPC

Psychotherapist
NJ
I am a licensed psychotherapist with over 15 years of clinical experience helping children, adolescents, adults, and families navigate trauma, anxiety, emotional dysregulation, and difficult life transitions. My approach is rooted in the belief that healing happens from the bottom up, addressing the connection between the nervous system, emotional experiences, and behavior. I integrate trauma-informed, evidence-based approaches, including EMDR, Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT), Dialectical Behavior Therapy (DBT), exposure-based interventions, and somatic techniques to support meaningful, lasting change. I have particular experience treating childhood and complex trauma, PTSD, anxiety, OCD, emotional and behavioral challenges, and parent-child relationship difficulties. My goal is to create a supportive, collaborative environment where individuals feel understood, develop greater emotional regulation, process difficult experiences, and build healthier patterns for themselves and their families.

What should a new client know about working with you?

Working with me means having a therapist who values connection, collaboration, and understanding the whole person rather than simply treating symptoms. I believe meaningful healing begins with feeling safe, understood, and supported. My approach is warm, compassionate, and individualized, while also incorporating practical, evidence-based strategies to help you make meaningful progress. I look beyond surface behaviors to understand how past experiences, relationships, and nervous system responses influence the way we feel and function. Whether we are working through trauma, anxiety, emotional regulation, or family challenges, my goal is to help you develop a deeper understanding of yourself, build on your strengths, and create lasting change. Therapy is a collaborative process, and I strive to create a space where you feel comfortable showing up as you are, asking difficult questions, and moving forward at a pace that feels right for you.

What is your typical process for working with clients?

The therapeutic process begins with an initial appointment where we explore what brings you to therapy, your current concerns, personal history, and goals for treatment. This first step allows me to better understand your experiences, identify areas where support may be helpful, and begin developing a treatment plan tailored to your needs. From there, sessions focus on building a therapeutic relationship, establishing emotional safety, and developing practical tools to manage symptoms and improve daily functioning. Depending on your goals, treatment may incorporate trauma processing, EMDR, CBT, DBT, exposure-based interventions, and somatic approaches. Progress is an ongoing collaboration, and treatment is adjusted as your needs evolve. My goal is not simply to help you manage symptoms, but to help you understand underlying patterns, strengthen emotional regulation, and develop skills that support lasting change beyond the therapy room.
