Getting to know Vince Heyman

The provider is an AMFT and is currently working under the supervision of a licensed practitioner. Their current employer is Sonder Therapy Group. I’m a Marriage and Family Therapist in San Diego, and I work with individuals, couples, and families who feel overwhelmed, disconnected, or stuck in self-defeating patterns. My path to becoming a therapist was shaped by my own experience in therapy. Working with someone who supported and guided me through a difficult time was deeply transformative. It showed me how powerful it can be to feel accepted and understood, while being provided the environment and tools where real insight and growth was possible. This experience ultimately inspired me to become a therapist myself to give back the depth of care that transformed my life, and continues to guide how I show up for my clients. What often sets my work apart is the combination of deep acceptance and meaningful insight I bring to the room. My clients share that my calming presence helps them feel comfortable to be fully themselves around me, and to slow down and regain a sense of stability. One of my strengths is helping you gain a real understanding of what is causing your emotional distress, and practical ways to work through them. Whether we’re working through anxiety, depression, relationship challenges, or life transitions, my goal is to help you accept and understand yourself, and make changes that feel authentic and meaningfully improve your wellbeing.

What should a new client know about working with you?

People often describe me as calm, grounded, and kind. My goal is to create an environment where you can let your guard down so you can be yourself and share what’s troubling you without worrying about being judged. Even when other parts of your life feel shaky or overwhelming, I want therapy to provide you the stability and confidence to take your next step forward. In our work together, you won’t get someone who simply sits back and nods. I balance warmth and acceptance with thoughtful, respectful feedback that provides real insight to improving your life through actionable steps. I work collaboratively and invite your input along the way. I never want therapy to feel like another task on your to-do list, but something you look forward to because it lightens the load.

What is your typical process for working with clients?

In the beginning, my focus is on getting to know you and building a relationship where you feel comfortable opening up about what’s been weighing on you. I’ll ask insightful questions to help us understand what’s behind your distress and what you’re hoping for from therapy, so we can start moving toward the life you truly want. Many clients come in feeling overwhelmed, without having the words for what’s going on. One of my goals early on is for you to feel reassured that what you’re experiencing isn’t a mystery and that there’s nothing inherently wrong with you. Your struggles make sense in the context of your life. Therapy with me is collaborative and tailored to you. I will meet you where you are, and we will move forward at your pace, and in a way that feels authentic and meaningful to you. Many clients begin therapy feeling high levels of anxiety, depression, stress, or relational conflict, and are understandably looking for some relief. Early on, I’ll help you understand what’s fueling your struggles and share powerful ways to calm emotional overload, navigate daily challenges, and support your mind, body, and nervous system. As things begin to feel more stable, we often move toward deeper work that may be giving rise to your symptoms. This can include processing emotional experiences, breaking free of long-standing patterns, and learning to relate to yourself with more compassion instead of self-criticism, so the pressure can ease. My greatest hope is that through our work, you experience meaningful transformation that grows from deep self-understanding, acceptance, and aligned action, rather than from feeling like you need to fix who you are.
