Your teenage son with ADHD has shut down, fallen behind, and pulled away. Nothing you've tried has really reached him. You're starting to wonder if anyone actually can. I was that kid. Too much homework, too little interest, too many people telling me to just try harder. I didn't get real support until the end of high school, and treatment changed everything. I went from barely making it through high school to community college, then the University of Florida, then a Master of Social Work from Florida State. My bachelor's in Education Sciences with a specialization in Educational Psychology gave me a framework most therapists don't have for understanding what school actually feels like for these kids. The frustration, the shame, the gap between how smart everyone knows he is and how little it seems to matter. Before private practice I worked in youth drug courts, inpatient psychiatric settings, and community mental health. Hard cases, high stakes. I moved to private practice to do deeper work with kids who haven't hit a wall yet. Kids I knew I could reach. I offer evening and weekend sessions because these kids are already struggling in school and therapy shouldn't make that harder.

What should a new client know about working with you?

You've probably already tried a few things that didn't stick. A therapist he wouldn't open up to. Strategies that worked for a week. Conversations that turned into arguments. You're not a bad parent. This is genuinely hard, and most people don't have a roadmap for it. What you're actually looking for is the right fit. Someone who will reach him. Someone who gets it. Not just another competent professional telling you what you already know. That's what I try to be.

What is your typical process for working with clients?

The early sessions are about earning his trust. I validate how much he doesn't want to be there. I'm honest about what therapy is and isn't. I match his energy instead of performing warmth at him. These kids can smell inauthenticity from a mile away. I'm not trying to fix him in session one. I'm just trying to be someone worth talking to. ADHD rarely travels alone, and for him it runs deeper than the symptoms. Shame. A fractured sense of who he is. A kid who has quietly started to believe he's the problem. Treatment that stops at behavior misses all of it. The goal is a kid who stops fighting himself and starts figuring out how to actually work with his brain. When that happens, everything else gets easier.
