What should a new client know about working with you?

My therapeutic style is flexible depending on the needs of my clients. I have a person centered approach with an existentialist leaning as I believe we as humans strive to find meaning in our lives in everything we do and in every interaction we have. We need meaningful relationships, work and social activities in order to be healthy. When we don’t have meaning we become unhappy, overwhelmed, depressed or addicted. In addition to my existentialist toolkit, I have many other therapeutic tools I can use to help clients achieve their mental health goals. I tailor my style and focus based on the individual's needs and interpersonal style. Much of my work is with those who are undergoing significant life changes such as gender expression/identity; physical, social and emotional transition, navigating significant life changes such as moving from student role to adult role, coming out, marriage and divorce, changing careers and other major life transitions. I know that even good change can be stressful and can bring up long forgotten issues or old coping mechanisms that are no longer useful to us.

What is your typical process for working with clients?

A typical session with me will include talk therapy, challenging unhelpful ideas or beliefs about oneself, developing skills and strategies to move forward toward self-actualization, discussing barriers to change and finding ways to remove those obstacles. Goal setting and accountability, strengths building and self expression are valued and encouraged in my work.
