Xinyue (Joy) Wang, MA

Psychotherapist
NY
In therapy, I care about getting to know the person in front of me. I provide therapy in both English and Mandarin. I work with clients experiencing anxiety, depression, relationship and family concerns, self-esteem difficulties, identity concerns, academic and workplace stress, burnout, grief and loss, and major life transitions. I also enjoy working with clients who are navigating cross-cultural experiences or trying to find their footing during periods of change and uncertainty. My approach to therapy is integrative and individualized. Rather than fitting everyone into a single framework, I try to understand each person in the context of their own experiences, relationships, and circumstances. My work is informed by relational, existential, psychodynamic, and narrative perspectives, while I also draw from mindfulness, acceptance-based approaches, emotion regulation, and other practical tools when they are helpful. To me, therapy is not only about reducing symptoms. It can also be a space to better understand yourself, recognize what may be keeping you stuck, and find more freedom in how you relate to yourself, others, and the choices you make.

What should a new client know about working with you?

You don't need to know exactly what is wrong or have a clear goal before coming to therapy. You may be feeling anxious, overwhelmed, or stuck without fully knowing why. You may notice yourself returning to the same feelings or relationship patterns. Or things may seem fine from the outside, while internally, something just doesn't feel quite right. All of these are valid places to start. When we work together, I won't rush to tell you what you should think or do. I want to take the time to understand your experience and what has brought you to where you are now. As we get to know each other, we may begin to notice patterns that keep showing up, make sense of what feels difficult or stuck, and explore what you would like to be different. At the same time, therapy doesn't always have to involve looking deeply into the past. If something in your life feels overwhelming right now, we can start there. We can work on ways to cope with difficult emotions and situations while also making room for deeper exploration when it feels useful. I hope to create a space where you can bring in things that may be difficult to explain or put into words, while gradually finding new ways to understand yourself and approach your life.

What is your typical process for working with clients?

In our first session, I will spend time getting to know you and understanding what brings you to therapy at this point in your life. We will talk about what has been difficult recently, what you hope might change, and other parts of your life that feel important to understanding what you are going through. Over the first few sessions, we will begin to identify what feels most important to focus on and develop a direction for our work together. You don't need to have everything figured out at the beginning, and our focus can change as we learn more about what you need from therapy. From there, sessions will be shaped by what feels most important to you. Some days, we may focus on a specific situation or concern. Other times, we may explore recurring emotions, relationship patterns, or ways of responding that you would like to understand differently. When helpful, I may also introduce emotion regulation skills or other practical tools. We will continue to check in about what is and isn't helping, what you are noticing outside of therapy, and where you would like our work to go next.
