Psychotherapist
2 Overhill Rd, #400, Scarsdale, NY
Session Rates: Individual Therapy: $300/45-minute session; Couples Therapy: $400/60-minute session; Family Therapy with parents and children: $450/60-minute session. I am out of network with insurances and clients are self-pay. If you have out-of-network benefits (many PPO plans have) and have met your deductible, your insurance is likely to refund a large portion of your sessions. Please verify with your insurance directly. I specialize in couples therapy, premarital counseling, and family therapy for adolescent depression. Together, we'll work on communication issues, conflict, trust, cultural differences, intimacy, financial disagreement, consideration of divorce, co-parenting, and managing adolescent anxiety, depression, or parental stress. Many worry therapy means just being listened to with no real guidance. That’s not how I work. I actively guide you without taking sides and help build understanding, empathy, and stronger bonds. We'll identify what's keeping you stuck, find practical solutions, and make lasting changes. As your relationships improve, so will your overall well-being and happiness. I practice Integrative Systemic Therapy that incorporates evidence-based couples and family therapy approaches such as emotionally focused therapy and the Gottman Method, tailored to your unique needs and cultural background. I hold a Master’s in Applied Psychology from Tsinghua University, a PhD from the University of Minnesota, and completed a post-doctoral fellowship at The Family Institute at Northwestern University. As a marriage and family therapy professor, I’ve trained over a hundred therapists and conduct research on couple/family relationships, parenting, and child mental health. I’m fluent in English and Mandarin and provide culturally affirming services for clients from diverse backgrounds, including LGBTQ+ clients. I believe everyone should feel respected, understood, and seen.

What should a new client know about working with you?

I believe that every individual and relationship can grow and heal. My way of interacting with clients is non-judgmental, collaborative, authentic, and direct. For couples and families, I make sure to understand and respect everyone’s perspective and feelings, without taking sides. Sessions typically last 45-120 minutes, with weekly appointments recommended for optimal progress. Sessions length and frequency can be modified to meet your needs. Between sessions, we encourage you to practice what you’ve learned at home. The duration of therapy varies—some clients see progress after a few sessions, while others may need more time. I practice Integrative Systemic Therapy-a framework developed at the Family Institute at Northwestern University, grounded in more than three decades of research and clinical experience. It combines various therapeutic methods to best meet your unique needs. This approach allows me to be flexible, drawing from different strategies to help you find what works. Depending on your needs, intervention strategies may range from cognitive and behavioral changes, to enhancing emotional awareness and expression, to exploring your family of origin and past trauma. If one method doesn’t seem to resonate, I’ll try another until we find the right fit for you. I am also passionate about training therapists in using this approach. I have shared this approach with professional audiences at conferences and workshops globally. My book, Integrative Systemic Supervision: Training Therapists to Work with Individuals, Couples, and Families, was published in 2025. I also draw on other approaches such as Emotionally Focused Therapy, the Gottman Method, Attachment-based Family Therapy, Emotion-focused Family Therapy, Cognitive Behavioral Therapy, Narrative Therapy, Solution-Focused Brief Therapy, mindfulness, and Structural Family Therapy, tailoring these to your specific needs.

What is your typical process for working with clients?

After booking your appointment through Zocdoc, you can expect a call from me within 24 hours (on weekdays). During that call, we'll talk about what brings you to therapy, your goals, and any questions you may have. If your needs fall within my scope of practice, I'll send over intake paperwork to complete before our first session. If we determine it's not the right fit, I will do my best to connect you with a referral. In the event I'm unable to locate one, I'll direct you back to Zocdoc to explore other providers. In our first 2–4 sessions, I’ll focus on building rapport and helping you feel comfortable, while also learning about your personal and relationship history to create a tailored treatment plan. Throughout treatment, we’ll identify and understand repetitive patterns, explore their underlying causes, and work together to find solutions. I may suggest exercises for you to try both during and between sessions. I’ll regularly check in to ensure we’re aligned and making progress toward your goals. Starting therapy can feel nervous as you discover new things about yourself and/or your relationship. However, these moments offer a tremendous opportunity for growth. My experience shows that the more committed you are to the process, the greater the results.
