Getting to know Yuliya Golubev

I am a bilingual (English/Russian) licensed therapist and certified Gestalt therapist with over 20 years of experience supporting individuals through emotional, relational, and life transitions. I specialize in working with parents navigating postpartum depression and anxiety, as well as the complex identity shifts that come with pregnancy, postpartum, and early parenthood. My approach is grounded in Gestalt therapy and informed by psychoanalytic and relational perspectives. I help clients slow down, increase awareness, and better understand emotional patterns, including those rooted in earlier relationships and life experiences. I also incorporate practical tools when helpful to support coping and resilience. As a mother of two, I bring both clinical expertise and lived understanding of parenting, identity shifts, and the emotional demands of family life in New York City. Navigating life between cultures—an immigrant home and U.S. society—gave me a lived understanding of the emotional complexity that often accompanies migration: loss and opportunity, belonging and disconnection, resilience and vulnerability. This perspective allows me to deeply understand the challenges many clients face as they navigate cultural expectations, identity conflicts, parenting across cultures, and the pressure to adapt while staying connected to their roots. I work with immigrants and first- and second-generation individuals addressing intergenerational trauma, identity, and relationship patterns. As a bicultural therapist, I am attentive to how cultural, ethnic, and linguistic backgrounds shape emotional experience, coping styles, and relationships. I strive to create a therapeutic space where clients feel seen, respected, and understood, while remaining aware of my own perspective and its impact on the process.

What should a new client know about working with you?

Working with me is an active, thoughtful, and collaborative process. We work as a team. I am not a “sit back and just listen” therapist—I stay engaged with you, asking questions, sharing observations, and helping you notice patterns as they unfold in real time. My work is grounded in Gestalt therapy, which means we pay attention to your present-moment experience, while also gently exploring how past relationships and early experiences may still be shaping how you feel, think, and relate today. In our work, we pay attention not only to your story, but also to what is happening between the lines. I may invite you to notice what it is like for you to share something—what emotions come up, what happens in your body, and what you experience in the moment. We also explore what is happening between us in the room, as this can often reflect important relational patterns. This helps us build a fuller, more meaningful picture of your inner world. Many of my clients come in feeling overwhelmed, anxious, or disconnected from themselves—especially during pregnancy, postpartum, or while navigating the demands of parenting. Others come in struggling with identity, relationships, or the tension of living between cultures. You don’t need to have the “right words” or a clear understanding of what’s going on. Part of our work is making sense of what feels confusing or hard to name. I will at times challenge you—always with care and intention—not to push you, but to help you move beyond patterns that keep you stuck, such as over-responsibility, self-criticism, or difficulty asking for support. At the same time, I believe therapy should feel like a space where you can exhale, feel met, and not judged. As a bilingual and bicultural therapist, I am especially attuned to the nuances of cultural identity, immigration, and intergenerational experiences. I understand how much can remain unspoken in families and how that can shape your inner world.

What is your typical process for working with clients?

In our first session, I will ask what is bringing you to therapy at this time. This is a space for you to share what feels most important—whether it is something specific or a more general sense that something doesn’t feel right. At the same time, we will also begin paying attention to what is happening in the therapy room itself—how it feels for you to be here, to talk to me, and to open up. This helps us understand not only your story, but also your relational patterns as they unfold in real time. We will also get a sense of whether we are a good fit to work together. In the following sessions, I focus on getting to know you more deeply. I will ask questions about your current life, relationships, history, and the experiences that have shaped you. My approach is grounded in Gestalt therapy, which means we pay attention not only to what you say, but how you say it—your emotional responses, your body sensations, and what may be happening “between the lines.” I help clients recognize their patterns—how they relate to themselves and to others. Together, we explore where these patterns come from and how they show up in the here and now, both in your daily life and in our work together. This includes noticing your thoughts, emotions, and what is happening in your body, as well as how you respond in relationships. We will also explore your goals for therapy. Some clients come with clear goals, while others discover them over time. Together, we will define what feels meaningful and important for you, and we will work toward those goals at a pace that feels supportive but also allows for growth. Ultimately, I will help you develop stronger self-support as you navigate your unique journey. We will pay attention to both the internal and external barriers that may make it difficult to access support—such as self-criticism, fear of vulnerability, or relational dynamics—and work toward creating more flexibility, awareness, and choice in how you respond.

Yuliya has been an asset to me for the last couple of years, being flexible with our appointments and really seeming to listen and pay attention throughout every session. She offers sincere insight and we have developed a rapport that has been very helpful in my everyday life. Wonderful provider.
I came to Yulia for help with anxiety and depression. Since I started meeting with Yulia, every aspect of my life has improved. I am constantly learning and growing in ways I didn’t know were possible. Having Yulia as my therapist had been an absolute blessing.
Yuliya is a wonderful therapist who makes you feel safe and comfortable from the very beginning. She finds the right approach and she has helped me tremendously through some of the challenges. I still use the techniques she taught me in my every day life.
Yuliya was the best therapist I’ve had! After just over a year of weekly therapy, there was a marked improvement in my self esteem, energy, outlook, you name it. She taught me a lot and helped me cope with my anxiety and depression. The only reason I had to stop seeing her was due to my insurance carrier. If you can, I’d 100% recommend scheduling a consultation with Yuliya!
I was meeting with Yuliya for about 6 months - Overall, she was able to equip me with various coping mechanisms for the problems I was facing and helped me make progress week to week. She was very friendly and easy to talk to. There was a good balance between her leading the sessions and myself
Yuliya is an amazing therapist. She supported me in my healing process and helped me overcome my fears of motherhood. She is knowledgeable, communicative, and incredibly professional. I was so sad to leave her when she told me she could no longer accept my insurance but am so grateful to her for everything we were able to accomplish together. I would highly recommend her!!
Yulia Golubev is truly a gem. She made is so easy to open up and was always listening with concern. Yulia was able to teach me practical strategies that were easy to use and remember. I highly recommend Yulia as a professional.
Yuliya was instrumental with me finding and developing a clear eyed and compassionate relationship with myself. She has a very warm and thoughtful way to help bring patterns, emotions and clarity to the surface. She is highly trained in models that I was interested in exploring; IFS (Internal Family Systems). I've had other therapists in the past and my sessions with her truly reflected back the old patterns and limited thoughts that were part of my personality and habitual view of myself; like no other. The way I give myself grace for emotions that I feel has been the #1 piece to my puzzle. The relationship and the way I view myself has shifted dramatically. She is beyond professional and also invested in her clients. I was always impressed with how deeply she listened and remembered many details throughout the year. I also appreciated the homework/tools given when asked for. I will add, I had a turning point of events that really required deep conversations and professional guidance. Pandemic, divorce, moving across the country, promotion, dating again and lingering imposter syndrome mentality. It was a time that really required gentleness and an expert to help keep my thoughts and emotions on a healthy track. I highly recommend Yuliya!
I am so thankful for Yuliya! I had difficulties finding the right therapist, having tried two others before sticking with Yuliya. She was super flexible to my needs, seeing me every other week, weekly, and occasionally twice a week, depending on how I was doing. She has a calming demeanor that made her easy to talk to, and her approach providing CBT and related tools and readings was crucial for learning how to manage my anxiety. I highly recommend her!
