Getting to know Yusra Al-Shawaf

I am a licensed clinical social worker, having received my bachelor's degree in psychology from the University of Illinois, Urbana-Champaign, and my master's degree in social work from Columbia University. My social work career began by working with hospice patients, which deepened my interest in providing support to those experiencing chronic illness, grief, and loss. I also have a special interest in relationship skills and treating symptoms of depression and anxiety. My approaches to therapy are as unique as the clients I encounter. I work to build genuine connections with my clients to help them feel safe and secure. Whatever it is that is leading you to explore therapy, I hope that I can be of service to you.

What should a new client know about working with you?

Much of my initial visit is about getting to know you and what brought you to making an appointment. This is also an opportunity for you to see if I am a good fit for you and to ask any initial questions. Of course, questions are always welcome at any time during the therapy process! From there, each session is focused on what is most front of mind for you, because I recognize that there may be things happening from week to week that you want to discuss. I will follow up on things discussed previously, or perhaps I will notice a connection between topics and bring that to the table. But I want my clients to feel like they have sense of control over what is discussed in session.
