What should a new client know about working with you?

Therapy with me is collaborative, individualized, and grounded in the belief that there is no one-size-fits-all approach to mental health care. I want you to feel that you can bring the complexity of who you are into therapy without having to fit yourself or your experiences into a predetermined model of treatment. My role is not to tell you how to live your life, but to help you better understand yourself, identify what matters to you, build on the strengths you already possess, and develop skills that support meaningful and sustainable change. My style is compassionate, curious, practical, and nonjudgmental. I value authenticity and genuine human connection while also taking the work of therapy seriously. I want you to feel genuinely heard and understood. Therapy can include serious and difficult conversations, but warmth and humor also have a place in my work. Depending on your needs and preferences, I may draw from cognitive, behavioral, somatic, expressive, and mindfulness-based approaches as part of individualized, evidence-based care. Our work may include developing healthier coping strategies, strengthening emotional regulation, increasing awareness of thoughts, emotions, behaviors, and physical responses, practicing mindfulness and self-compassion, clarifying personal values, and developing greater flexibility in responding to life’s challenges. We will regularly consider what is and is not working and adapt our approach accordingly. Each session should build on the work we have already done rather than feeling like we are starting over each time. Ultimately, I want you to develop greater insight, confidence, and practical skills that you can continue using long after therapy ends.

What is your typical process for working with clients?

Our first sessions focus on getting to know you as a whole person rather than simply identifying a diagnosis or list of symptoms. We will talk about what brings you to therapy, what you are currently experiencing, relevant parts of your history, what has helped before, and what you would like to change. From there, we develop an individualized treatment plan and identify evidence-based approaches that fit your needs and goals. Early work often includes developing practical coping and emotional regulation skills that can support you both in and outside of sessions. If trauma processing is part of your goals, we do not have to begin by immediately revisiting your most difficult experiences. Trauma-informed treatment often begins with history taking, rapport, safety, stabilization, and skills development. Deeper processing can follow when there is adequate preparation and it is clinically appropriate. Throughout treatment, we revisit goals, track progress, practice useful skills, and adjust the plan as needed. Each session is intended to build on the work we have already done.
