Statistics on diseases in Santa Clara County, California


Dermatologists can detect diseases such as cancer, diabetes, and CVD by first diagnosing symptoms that often appear on the skin. 


According to a study by the National Cancer Institute (NCI), between 2016 and 2020, the average incidence of melanoma (severe skin cancer) was close to 2.8 for every 100,000 people in Santa Clara County. This number is lower than that of most counties in the state. The average number of annual melanoma diagnoses was approximately 60 in the county and almost 1,258 in the state. 


According to America's Health Rankings, 11.6% of adults in California were diagnosed with diabetes in 2021, excluding prediabetes and gestational diabetes. The incidence of diabetes was higher in women (11.7%) and those 65 and older (23.5%). The percentage was slightly lower in men (11.5%), those aged 45 to 64 (16%), and those who were 18 to 44 (3.8%).


Further, in 2021, about 6.4% of the adult population in California was diagnosed with some form of CVD, such as angina, heart attack, stroke, coronary heart disease, or myocardial infarction. Men (7.6%) had a higher chance of being diagnosed with CVD than women (5.2%). The incidence of CVD increased with age, with 15.7% of those 65 and older affected by the condition. The incidence was lower in those aged 45 to 64 (7.6%) and those aged 18 to 44 (1.8%).
