My path to family medicine began with a genuine curiosity about what keeps communities healthy and what holds them back. Early on, I volunteered at a free medical clinic in Spartanburg, S.C., where I saw firsthand how much access to care can shape a person's life. That experience, combined with research I conducted on what motivates physicians to practice in underserved rural areas, reinforced why I chose a specialty built around relationships, continuity and whole-person care. Family medicine lets me show up for patients across every stage of life, and that is exactly where I want to be. When I sit down with a patient, my goal is to make sure they leave feeling heard. I ask questions, I listen carefully and I work to understand not just the medical concern in front of me but the full picture of what is going on in someone's life. Speaking multiple languages (Urdu, Hindi, Punjabi, French and limited Spanish) helps me better connect and communicate with my patients, particularly when English isn't their first language. I believe good care is built on trust, and trust takes honesty, consistency and a willingness to meet people where they are.
