For example, it was so rewarding to be entrusted as a primary care provider for four generations of a family over more than a decade. We get a unique opportunity that no other job offers-to be a part of their lives and challenges over several years. We should enable patients to be equal partners in their care by diligently listening to them, actively engaging them through motivation, and empowering them to take charge of their well-being. In your opinion, what should be the role of a primary care provider for a patient, taking into account both physical health and behavioral health needs? I believe in the classic “whole person approach,” having worked full spectrum family medicine in a primary care clinic, convenient care setting, as a hospitalist, and in rehab/skilled nursing facility settings. The importance of health maintenance cannot be overemphasized. As a PCP, I also stress the need for regular clinic visits and being proactive with your health needs. Health care is becoming complicated and overwhelming, especially for the younger generation. Patients need a trusted advocate to help them decide what's best for them and then continue to be there all along the way to help break down jargon and explain the nuances of their unique situation in simple terms.
