When I was younger, I thought I wanted to be a research scientist. I spent seven years in a research lab before earning my PhD in cellular physiology. That time made me realize that, while I enjoy the challenge of solving complex biological problems, I missed human interaction. In medical school I enjoyed my training in every specialty; family medicine thus seemed a natural fit. After practicing medicine for more than two decades, I believe my patients benefit not just from my medical knowledge, but from my understanding of the importance of cooperation and respect in the patient-physician relationship. I realize that my role is to provide information and make recommendations so that my patients can trust me to be their partner while doing what they feel is best for them. I come from a generation that considered medicine a calling, and I am unable to think of it any other way. My wife, Shannon, and I have been married since 1997, and we have four adult children including a set of fraternal triplets. We are active in our church. I enjoy completing home improvement projects, gardening, hitting the water to scuba dive or fish, and traveling to exciting places.
