My early career as an advanced practice nurse led me to want to do even more for patients. So, after several years as a nurse practitioner, I entered medical school with the goal of using my education to help improve the health of my community. My previous career in nursing guides my work as a doctor. It taught me the value of human endurance and frailty, the value of a positive aura and many years of experiences caring for patients which I bring to every patient encounter. Patient care at its best and most productive includes a blend of evidence-based medicine and natural approaches to treatment, when they are appropriate and available. I take the time to educate patients so they understand the rationale behind their customized treatment plan, and I'm proactive in following up to monitor the effect treatment is having. I was honored to be a North Carolina Medical Society Medical Scholar in 2007. As a resident physician at Weill-Cornell Medical Center in New York, I was recognized for my contribution to published research on mantle cell lymphoma and angiogenesis. I enjoy being active in the medical community and in my community at large. I served as chairperson for the ethics committee for both Roper St. Francis Healthcare in Charleston and CarolinaEast Health System in New Bern, North Carolina and also served as physician liaison to the Diabetes Education Committee at Dosher Memorial Hospital in Southport, North Carolina. I'm also active in Blue Star Mothers of Brunswick County and volunteered at The Shepherd's Table, a food pantry in Conway, South Carolina. I'm married and have four grown children and three grandchildren. The hobbies that bring me the most joy are yoga, playing piano and violin and gardening.
