Getting to know Aileen Smith-Valley

*Providers at this practice do not prescribe medication* I am a graduate of New York University, where I earned a Master's in Mental Health and Wellness Counseling. I also hold a Master's in Youth and Family Recreation Management from Brigham Young University and a Bachelor's degree from Siena College. I enjoy being in a career that is service-oriented. Working predominantly with couples, families, and pediatrics, I have extensive experience getting to know and understand the unique identifiers each person holds and how that impacts the therapeutic process. While I can work with any client, I specialize in family therapy, couples counseling, parenting, sex therapy, women's issues and pregnancy, religious identity, vocational counseling, neurodiversity, eating disorders, PTSD, trauma, and OCD.

What should a new client know about working with you?

I acknowledge that the majority of therapy is to get us from a place of feeling “stuck,” to becoming “unstuck,” and I encourage patience with that process. I approach each of my clients with empathy and kindness, utilizing systemic therapeutic techniques. I believe that a person cannot be treated without understanding the systems in which they abide. Culture helps us to determine our personal and collective identities and narratives, and thus is it very significant to provide holistic counseling for each of my clients/families. My desire for every one of my clients is to think of counseling as a safe, nonjudgmental space where you can do client-led work so that you get the services that you specifically require and prefer. I believe that the client is the expert in their lives, while I am the expert in the science that can help one live a more functioning, fulfilling life based upon your personal belief of what the “good life” looks like for your unique situation. The practice will send you an email to complete intake via Simple Practice. The Intake form must be filled out completely prior to your appointment and a credit card must be provided as per the practice’s cancellation policy (cancellations must be made before 24 hours of the appointment). Also, there are no psychiatrists or other providers who prescribe medications at this practice.

What is your typical process for working with clients?

Therapy is part of life, and life is part of therapy. Thus, I have a very flexible approach to counseling and usually do not require homework. I do expect the techniques that we discuss in the sessions to be utilized in the client’s life at their discretion, and within the timing the client feels comfortable engaging in their next stages of health. Come, bring a snack or a beverage of choice, and cozy up to counseling! I look forward to meeting you and learning more about the unique qualities that make you, you.
