Dr. Alex Kirk, PhD

Psychotherapist
CO
I’m a licensed clinical psychologist based in Colorado providing virtual therapy to adults across Colorado and most U.S. states (via PSYPACT). My work focuses on anxiety, fear, OCD, trauma, chronic pain, and sleep - areas where the brain is often trying to help, but ends up getting in the way. The brain is very good at solving problems - and very good at creating them. It learns quickly: avoid discomfort, reduce risk, stay in control. Those strategies often work at first. Over time, they can quietly narrow your life. Therapy is a way to step back and understand what your brain is doing, why it’s doing it, and how those patterns are being reinforced. My approach is grounded in evidence-based therapies and modern neuroscience, with advanced training in exposure-based treatments, CBT for insomnia, and pain reprocessing therapy. I serve on the clinical steering committee for the Exposure Therapy Consortium - an international group devoted to the research, education, and dissemination of anxiety treatments - and I’m actively involved in research and clinical program development focused on anxiety and chronic pain. I also served as a psychologist in the U.S. Navy, working with service members and advising on behavioral health systems - experience that shaped a practical, direct approach to care. At its core, my work is about helping people step out of restrictive patterns and move toward a life that feels more like their own - less organized around fear or discomfort, and more around what actually matters.

What should a new client know about working with you?

You can expect a style that is direct, collaborative, and focused on helping you make meaningful progress. We’ll spend time understanding what’s going on - but also looking closely at the patterns that may be keeping things stuck. That often includes some of the less obvious pieces: avoidance, overthinking, over-controlling, or trying to think your way out of experiences that don’t respond well to thinking alone. My approach is process-based rather than tied to a single therapy label. We’ll identify your goals, map out the patterns shaping your experience, and then focus on the specific processes most likely to help you move forward. In many cases, that means gradually stepping toward things you’ve been avoiding, loosening rigid habits, and building flexibility in how you respond. I tend to be active in sessions - asking questions, offering observations, and helping you see things from angles that might not be immediately obvious. The goal isn’t to push you (it is your life after all!), but rather it’s to find a pace that is both manageable and effective, so that change actually sticks. If you’re looking for therapy that is thoughtful, practical, and oriented toward real movement - not just insight alone - we’ll likely work well together.

What is your typical process for working with clients?

All care starts with an intake focused on understanding your concerns in more depth - what’s happening, how long it’s been going on, and what you’ve already tried. It's also a matter of ensuring we're an appropriate match for ongoing work together. From there, we’ll identify the patterns involved - how your thoughts, behaviors, and reactions are interacting to keep things stuck. This part is often more useful than it sounds. Once you can clearly see the system, you’re in a much better position to change it. Sessions themselves are semi-structured but not rigid. We’ll check in on what’s been happening, review anything you’ve been working on between sessions, and then focus on the next steps while always keeping the big picture in mind. That might look like testing out new approaches in real situations, gently stepping toward things you’ve been avoiding, or changing how you interact with yourself internally. Between sessions, there’s usually something to take with you - not homework in the traditional sense, but things to try, notice, or even just think more about after we talk. Therapy tends to work better when it doesn’t stay confined to the hour. Over time, the goal is to help you become less reliant on therapy - not more - by building the ability to navigate these patterns on your own.
