Alexandra Gaty, LCSW

Psychotherapist
CA
I’m a psychotherapist who works with adults and couples experiencing anxiety, relationship challenges, life transitions, trauma, and periods of significant change. I have a particular interest in working with artists and creative professionals, as well as individuals during pregnancy, the postpartum period, and the transition into parenthood. My style is warm, collaborative, and trauma-informed. I draw from psychodynamic therapy, cognitive and behavioral approaches, mindfulness, and somatic techniques to help clients better understand themselves, shift patterns that no longer serve them, and develop a stronger sense of connection to themselves and others. I believe therapy should make room for both insight and practical change. Many of the people I see are thoughtful, sensitive, high-achieving, or deeply self-aware, yet still find themselves overwhelmed, stuck, disconnected, or unsure how to move forward. Therapy can offer an opportunity to slow down, make sense of what is happening beneath the surface, and approach challenges with greater self-compassion. Whether you are dealing with anxiety, relationship difficulties, a major life transition, creative blocks, or a difficult emotional experience, our work will be tailored to your individual goals, circumstances, and pace.

My style is warm, collaborative, and trauma-informed.

What should a new client know about working with you?

I see therapy as a collaborative process rather than a place where you are simply given advice or told what to do. My style is warm, curious, and engaged, with room for both deeper exploration and practical support. I want you to feel comfortable being honest about what is going on, including the parts that may feel complicated, contradictory, or difficult to put into words. Sessions may involve exploring emotions and relationships, understanding recurring ways of thinking or responding, or developing tools to manage anxiety, stress, and difficult emotions. I also pay attention to how experiences are held in the body and may incorporate mindfulness, grounding, or somatic techniques when they feel useful. You do not need to have everything figured out before starting therapy. You may not know exactly why you are struggling or have a clear goal for every session. Sometimes the starting point is simply having a place to slow down, feel understood, and make sense of what you have been carrying. I aim to offer an environment that feels supportive and honest, where you can reflect on what is happening in your life while also gaining a clearer sense of what you want and how to move toward it.

What is your typical process for working with clients?

Our first sessions are an opportunity to get to know one another, understand what brings you to therapy, and identify what you would like support with. We will talk about your current concerns as well as relevant history, relationships, and patterns that may help put those concerns into context. We will also discuss what you hope to get from therapy and develop a plan that fits your goals. As therapy progresses, sessions are guided by what feels most relevant at that point in your life. A typical session may involve processing something that happened during the week, exploring a recurring emotional or relationship dynamic, working through a difficult decision or transition, or developing strategies for managing anxiety, overwhelm, or other challenges. At times, we may slow down and pay attention to how emotions show up in the body, particularly when stress or past experiences feel difficult to access through words alone. I may offer observations, questions, practical tools, or gentle challenges when they seem helpful. You will always have a voice in what we focus on and how we approach the process. The goal is not simply to feel better in the moment, but to develop greater self-understanding and create changes that feel meaningful and sustainable. Therapy is an ongoing process, and the pace and frequency of sessions can be adjusted as your circumstances change.
