Alicia Walker, LCSW

Psychotherapist
NJ
Change is not only scary, it is difficult. The laws of inertia tell us that nothing will change without an external force. I am an empathic, calming, and listening external force. Whether it is depression or anxiety from a life transition or past/present trauma, reaching out for support is essential. My motto is simple but true—Be heard. Feel better. I have 27 years of experience as a therapist. I have been trained in psychoanalytic theories (object relations, relational, and modern psychoanalysis) and interventions, as well as CBT and motivational interviewing (which is different than what it sounds like). I tailor the approach to the individual. I understand how scary reaching out can be. So many therapists, so many initials... It can be a very daunting task to find the correct match. However, like dating, sometimes you just have to try a few different therapists to figure out who is the right match (yes, that is what we called it before the dating sites). I hold a Master’s in Social Work from New York University and a Bachelor’s degree from Marist College.

What should a new client know about working with you?

I work both in person and via tele-health. I am patient, but also will empower you to "do the work". I have learned many different theories and my approach is different depending on the individual. Some are CBT, Motivational interviewing, Object relations, Modern psychoanalytic and family system theory. I have a gentle approach but not afraid to "keep digging" when we are in the muck.

What is your typical process for working with clients?

My typical process is to work together as we together explore motives to actions. I am a very empathic person and I also have a great memory so you are not repeating your self. Typical session is me listening to the stressors and asking questions along with empathic responses to build a relationship because it is in the therapy room that we work on outside relationships. My aim is for you to come to realize the answers because if I just tell you then it means nothing.
