Psychotherapist

Read all the books, scanned the internet, listened to advice from loved ones, and tried to make changes on your own, but you still don’t feel like yourself? It’s time to try a new approach. I can help. I will assist you to get unstuck and move in the direction you want to go with compassion, humor, and my clinical experience that spans over two decades. Your unique needs, focus, and challenges will serve as a guide for how I can best support you. Therapy is not one-size-fits-all, as some individuals respond best to active strategies, ideas, and concrete direction, while others need gentle encouragement to overcome barriers. My best work is with introspective individuals who are ready for growth and committed to lasting change. Many of my clients are women juggling high-demand careers, relationships, and motherhood. I also work with high school and college students who are often high achievers who struggle with perfectionism. Another client focus is clients with trauma and its continued impact on functioning.

What should a new client know about working with you?

Effective communication in a therapy relationship serves as a foundation for establishing trust and understanding. I strive for quality communication that will lead to a client feeling heard and involved in their care. I believe that open and honest communication will only enhance progress towards your goals. As early as junior high, I was the kid others went to for advice. I have a curiosity about individuals’ stories, personality traits, our human capacity for reliance, and human development. After taking my first psychology course in college, I found my future career. Before opening my private practice, I worked as a clinician and director in various community mental health clinics in Southern California. I have been fortunate enough to work in diverse settings that taught me about many different cultures, perspectives, and afflictions. I have extensive training and experience working with a wide range of emotional and behavioral issues, including abuse and trauma, women’s issues, crisis intervention, anxiety, and depression.

What is your typical process for working with clients?

Foremost, therapy is a safe place. I engage with clients using a collaborative and compassionate approach. I will encourage you to be open and honest, both with me and with yourself, even when the conversation feels difficult. From this truth, we can address situations or events and how you experience them. Together, we will make plans on how best to achieve your goals and celebrate your success. I use creative ways to engage and help clients look at issues from a new perspective, including analogies, humor, stories, and art. I often suggest “homework” outside of our sessions to practice new life skills. My primary orientations are Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT), Psychodynamic, Family Systems, Schematic, and Trauma-Informed. It is normal to feel apprehensive about this initial meeting. more so if you have never sought therapy before and aren’t sure what to expect. The first session is to get to know each other, asking questions about you, your history, how you cope, and your struggles. We will discuss treatment approaches, your goals for therapy, expectations, and more. Foremost, the purpose of the first session is to help you and your therapist get to know each other and to help you decide if you think the relationship will be a good fit.
