Getting to know Alyson Gardner

Alyson Gardner is a licensed clinical social worker in Utah and Florida with nearly a decade of clinical experience. She sees adults and families by video in both states, working on trauma, anxiety, depression, disability and chronic health, and the life transitions that arrive whether or not you were ready. For trauma, she uses EMDR and Cognitive Processing Therapy, two approaches built specifically for trauma rather than adapted to it. That training shapes how she works with anxiety and depression too, even when trauma is not the reason someone reaches out. Before moving into general adult practice, Alyson spent six years as an LCSW at a neurobehavioral center specializing in neurodivergent clients and families. She conducted assessments, ran social-skills groups, provided parent education, and worked alongside psychologists and behavior analysts. She works in an affirming rather than corrective frame, and she adapts session structure to the person instead of asking the person to fit a format. You do not need a formal ADHD or autism diagnosis to talk about either. She also works with people living with a physical disability, a chronic condition, or a diagnosis that changed the plan, and with families when the pattern sits between family members rather than inside one of them. Other areas include career stress and burnout, self-esteem, executive function, and young adult and later-life transitions. She welcomes BIPOC, LGBTQIA+, and relationship-diverse clients. Approaches include CBT, EMDR, Cognitive Processing Therapy, DBT-informed interventions, Motivational Interviewing, ACT, and mindfulness-based and strengths-based approaches. Your first visit is a full intake session. Sessions are held by secure video, and you need to be located in Utah or Florida at the time of your appointment.

What should a new client know about working with you?

If therapy has felt like being managed before, tell me. I would rather adjust the format than ask you to fit it. Some people do better with structure and worksheets, and others need more room to talk or more breaks. We figure out what works for you. You do not need to arrive with trauma, a diagnosis, or the right words. Plenty of people come in because of a transition, a confidence problem, or a sense that something is off. If you are coming as a family, let me know who you would like in the room, and we will plan the first sessions around that.

What is your typical process for working with clients?

The first session is about understanding what brings you in, what has and has not worked before, and what you want to be different. From there we set goals together and decide how often to meet. Weekly is common at the start. For trauma, I use EMDR or Cognitive Processing Therapy, depending on what fits you, and I build in skills for managing stress before we get to harder material. For anxiety, depression, and transitions, I draw on CBT, ACT, and mindfulness. With families, I focus on the patterns between people rather than on one person as the problem. We review progress regularly and adjust as we go.

One of the things I like most about Alyson is that therapy with her feels collaborative. She listens to what is and isn’t working and adjusts instead of trying to force one particular approach.
Finding a therapist who understands ADHD and neurodivergence has made such a difference. Alyson didn’t treat the way my brain works like something that needed to be fixed, and I felt much less judged than I have in the past.
I was nervous about trying EMDR, but Alyson explained everything clearly and let me move at my own pace. I always felt like I had a choice in what we worked on and how far we went.
Alyson is knowledgeable without making therapy feel overly clinical. She is compassionate, down to earth, and gives me space to process while still helping the session go somewhere.
Alyson really understands the difference between anxiety and the overwhelm that can come with ADHD/autism. I appreciated not having every struggle automatically treated like an anxiety problem.
I came to Alyson feeling completely burned out and overwhelmed. She helped me understand why I kept reaching that point and gave me practical things I could actually use between sessions.
I’ve spent a lot of my life feeling like I should just be able to handle more than I can. Alyson helped me look at that with a lot less shame and understand my limits in a healthier way.
I really appreciate Alyson’s approach to trauma. She never pushed me to talk about things before I was ready, and I felt like there was actually a plan for how we were going to work through things instead of just talking about my week.
Alyson made me feel comfortable almost immediately. I’ve had therapy before where I felt like I was just explaining myself over and over, but with her I felt understood much more quickly.
