Getting to know Alyson Sandoval
Hi there, I'm Alyson!
Welcome! My name is Alyson Sandoval, and I am a licensed marriage and family therapist. I believe therapy is for everyone, and I love helping others work towards growth and change. I have many years of experience working with teens and adults on life transitions, anxiety, depression, relationships, self-esteem, and other common struggles.
I earned my Master’s in Counseling from California State University, Sacramento, which helped me develop the skills and knowledge to support my clients effectively.
My approach
I believe each person should have an individualized plan, and I usually use a person-centered approach. I lean towards cognitive behavioral therapy techniques for anxiety, self-esteem, and depressive symptoms but often mix in mindfulness, solution-focused, and narrative approaches. Even when working individually, I consider the family system to better individualize growth.
My focus
Much of my experience is with teens and young adults navigating anxiety, self-esteem, depression, relational conflict, and trauma. I also love working with mothers because self-care matters when pouring into others all day. Additionally, I have worked with many educators for the same reason.
My communication style
I aim to provide a safe, relaxing environment that feels peaceful and supportive. I convey empathy in each session and believe the client is the expert in their own life. I lean toward an open-ended approach so the most pertinent issues can be included.
My journey to mental healthcare
I have wanted to be a therapist since high school due to my interest in and care for people and the helping profession. I believe I have always had the natural calm and communication skills necessary and have honed those through education and experience. I pursued psychology as my undergraduate major before graduate studies.
