Getting to know Amanda Phillips

Welcome — I'm glad you're here. I work with high-functioning adults across New York State who look composed on the outside but feel like they're running on empty internally — anticipating problems before they happen, monitoring how they come across, and rarely feeling at ease even when things are going well. Many of my clients are managing anxiety that shows up alongside chronic illness, burnout, trauma, or the pressures of Jewish identity and spiritual life. My approach draws from Internal Family Systems (IFS) and trauma-informed therapy. Rather than just building a toolkit to manage anxiety, we get curious about the parts of you that have been scanning, bracing, and holding everything together — and work to understand what they're protecting and what they actually need. That shift, from managing anxiety to understanding it, is where real change happens. I'm IFS Level 1 trained, a Certified Clinical Trauma Professional, and a graduate of NYU's MSW program, where I was valedictorian. Sessions are conducted virtually across New York State.

What should a new client know about working with you?

You've likely spent years being the capable one — anticipating problems, managing everyone else's needs, holding it together even when your nervous system is running on empty. Maybe that anxiety shows up alongside a chronic illness, or it lives in your body as vigilance you can't quite switch off. Whatever brought you here, I want you to know you don't have to explain or justify it before we begin. My work draws from Internal Family Systems (IFS) and trauma-informed therapy, which means we won't spend our sessions only building coping strategies or managing symptoms from the outside. Instead, we get curious together about the parts of you that have been scanning, bracing, and over-preparing for a long time — and we work to understand what they've been protecting you from and what they actually need now. That shift, from managing anxiety to understanding it, tends to be where real, lasting change happens. I'm IFS Level 1 trained, a Certified Clinical Trauma Professional, and a graduate of NYU's MSW program. Clients describe me as grounded, direct without being clinical, and genuinely present in the room. I also work specifically with clients navigating Jewish identity and the cultural pressures that shape it. Sessions are held virtually across New York State. Our first conversation is simply to understand what brings you here and whether this feels like the right fit — no pressure, no assumptions, just space to land.

What is your typical process for working with clients?

Sessions with me are collaborative, not scripted — I follow your pace rather than a fixed protocol, though I'm an active presence in the room, not a silent listener. Early sessions focus on understanding the specific patterns you've developed: the vigilance, the over-responsibility, the ways you monitor yourself in relationships or manage a body that requires constant attention. Rather than jumping straight to coping tools, we get curious together about what those patterns have been protecting you from. In practice, that might mean noticing what happens in your body as you describe a stressful week, or gently naming a part of you that shows up to keep things under control. I'll check in often about what's landing and what isn't, and adjust as we go — this isn't a one-size-fits-all framework applied the same way to every client. Many people I work with have been in therapy before and are highly self-aware; when insight alone hasn't shifted the deeper pattern, we slow down and work experientially, in real time, rather than just talking about it. Over time, sessions tend to move from managing symptoms to genuinely understanding and softening what's underneath them.

I look forward to my weekly sessions with Amanda!! Since working together, she has helped me grow in so many ways, and she is truly someone I feel I can share anything with. Amanda has taught me a lot when it comes to myself, and the tools I can use to help me navigate through life and any obstacles.
Amanda has changed my perspective on therapy. For the first time I feel like I am getting the most out of speaking to someone. We’re working on issues in my past, how to deal with them in present day and how I want to continue to carry myself in the future. I also find her to be super relatable which helps me open up.
Amanda is such a great provider and always makes sure you feel comfortable! She always responds in a timely manner and is super flexible. I always feel seen with her after ever session we have, I often find myself looking forward to our next sessions! She truly has been so wonderful to work with, I highly recommend her.
Working with Amanda Phillips has been life-changing. Her compassion, insight, and patience are apparent in every session. After years of working together, I can honestly say that Amanda is the best therapist I have ever had. She helps me feel in control of my neurodivergence, helps me find kindness for myself when I am struggling, and prepares me with tools to succeed outside of our sessions. I cannot recommend Amanda Phillips highly enough-- her practice has helped me build compassion for myself and find joy in doing the work of personal growth.
I would highly recommend Amanda to anyone new to or experienced with therapy. She's an incredible therapist: kind, curious, patient. I have had countless truly meaningful sessions with her and always feel comfortable in our conversations. She's the best!
I’ve been meeting with Amanda for over a year now, and she has always been professional, non judgemental, and is a safe space for me. I’ve been in and out of therapy throughout the years, and I’ve never felt more comfortable with someone as I do with Amanda! I highly recommend her, and I’m grateful for my weekly sessions!
It was my very first appointment EVER. Currently I am happy with her, she has been extremely understanding to my situation and is allowing me a safe space to discuss the trial and tribulations that is thrown at us in life.

Amanda has been so helpful in my life ever since I started seeing her. Before her, I was new to therapy and had tried out a few different people. She made me feel so at ease, safe, and comfortable. It felt like the right fit and it was the best decision. I highly recommend her to anyone who is new to therapy, unsure where to start, or looking for someone that truly gets you. She’s amazing.
I've tried a few different therapists over the years, Amanda has been the most empathetic, and caring one to date. She always focuses on the important topics, and helps me talk through my trauma without being triggered.
