Amy Bruce, LCSW

Psychotherapist
VA
I am a clinical social worker specializing in couples therapy, LGBTQ+ issues, and postpartum anxiety and depression. My counseling style is warm and interactive. I see relationships as central to the process of change and believe that learning to love and accept yourself completely is the key to creating the life you desire and deserve. My approach emphasizes being present in the moment to understand what a client is presenting, both verbally and nonverbally. Mindfulness is my most important value and way of connecting in the treatment room. I most enjoy working with people who are trying to reclaim themselves after realizing they have let others dictate their paths in ways that don't work for them. Homework is optional, but attendance is key in supporting growth. My clients find that I am skilled at listening and helping them identify what they want and need in life. My communication style is open, supportive, and direct. I help clients explore where they have come from and also learn and practice skills to move forward on their journeys. I earned my Master's in Social Work from The University of Texas at Austin. I was always the person friends came to when they wanted to talk. After retiring from corporate America, I wanted to use the skills I'd developed to connect with others and work in a field that allowed me to incorporate many different paths to healing. I explored a multitude of approaches and was most drawn to talk therapy informed by the arts. Drawing on my history as a musician, writer, composer, and art lover, I integrate these influences into my work. I also completed postgraduate training in psychoanalysis to further explore interdisciplinary approaches. Today, I love what I do and continue to explore the paths and practices that have brought me to where I am now.
