“I feel so confident talking to her, the first therapist I’ve actually felt comfortable actually opening up with, especially with how hard it is for myself to open up. She makes it feel so natural and I do not feel judged at all, she created an environment to where it feels like I’m talking to my best friend.”

Getting to know Angela Mathews-Shorts

Welcome, and congratulations on the courage to take the first step. My name is Angela. I am a psychotherapist with a Psy.D. ABD in Clinical Psychology: Marriage and Family Therapy, and I hold a Master's in Clinical Psychology from the Chicago School of Professional Psychology. I hope to inspire your curiosity toward self-awareness to develop a strong sense of self-acceptance and healing. I value a person-centered approach as it promotes self-esteem, autonomy, and agency toward wellness. Humanistic psychologist Carl Rogers said, "Growth occurs when individuals confront problems, struggle to master them, and through that struggle develop new aspects of their skills, capacities, and views about life." We will build on your strengths. I will responsively review your emotional and mental health care needs and help you achieve desired outcomes toward your potential. At times, life feels out of balance from both foreseen and unexpected experiences, disappointments, life transitions, and personal trauma events. These experiences can impact your mental, emotional, and spiritual well-being. It can be difficult to navigate on your own. Together, through our therapeutic alliance, I will help you counter problematic behavior with healthy alternatives to enhance mental, emotional, and physical wellness. I want to help connect your head with your heart. Let's do it.

What should a new client know about working with you?

Through unconditional positive regard, I will help you increase self-awareness and motivate you in your commitment to develop new thoughts, feelings and new patterns towards healing. With our interactive relationship, we can build an alliance and develop a collaborative plan toward your desired goals. My hope is that the closing of each session is that your have developed insights into yourself and feel empowered to step into growth promoting experiences.

More information on payments and coverage

Payment is due after each session and will be charged with your card on file for any portion of patient responsibility. Receipts will be provided at the time of the charge. This typically takes place 2-4 weeks after the session, once your insurance has had a chance to process the claim. We try our best to verify eligibility, but it is ultimately your responsibility to check coverage and out-of-pocket costs for services. For out-of-network visits, you will be billed at the provider’s self-pay rate, and we can provide an invoice for you to submit to your insurance for potential out-of-network reimbursement based on your plan’s benefits.

Angela makes me feel comfortable talking about difficult issues and makes me feel safe. her demeanor is very professional yet warm and welcoming.
She really wants to help. So far, she's listened really well and tried to pinpoint underlying issues that she can help me dissolve/eliminate. I'm not that easy to uncover. I jump around from topic to topic staying on the surface. She's reeled me in on several occasions, and I think she'll guide me towards some breakthroughs eventually.
She has made it very easy for me to open up.
Angela is very good at listening and providing support. I really appreciate how well she tracks my process and assists me in thinking through challenges. She also consistently gives me hope, which I needed much more than I even knew. I feel fortunate to have the opportunity to work with her and feel she is very skilled at what she does.
Angela has been a blessing. She is kind, yet she makes me look at the big picture of things. I have learned about myself and will continue to move forward.
Angela is great at empathizing with me and where I'm at, but also challenging me and helping me find solutions to what I'm struggling with, without seeming pushy.
I love talking to Angela. Her kindness and our similar personalities make it so that she understands me to a degree most people don't, making her an even more incredible therapist. She allows me to choose what I want and speak freely and I love her style of collaborative work. It's what I really needed in a therapist and ultimately what makes us work so well.
