Getting to know Dr. Barbara Palomino de Velasco

Hi there, I'm Barbara! Hello, my name is Dr. Barbara Palomino de Velasco, or if you wish, you may call me "Dr. P." I earned my PsyD in Clinical Psychology from Albizu University and have been working with adults and families for over 20 years. I have had the privilege of assisting them in areas of communication, problem-solving, depression management, anxiety reduction, and the development of adaptive coping skills. Additionally, I train nationwide on law enforcement suicide prevention, critical incidents, and building more resilient first responder families. My approach My therapeutic approach includes Cognitive Behavioral Therapy, Motivational, Solution Focused, and, if you prefer, Faith-Based Approaches. My focus After years of working with forensic and substance abuse patients, I have learned to respect all individuals regardless of any mistakes they may have made in life. However, I enjoy working with all patient populations and helping them. I look forward to learning about your goals and developing a working relationship with you! I am a huge proponent of Mental Fitness as an essential part of everyone's well-being, and I am eager to help you create a plan that supports your goals. My communication style The environment I prefer to foster with my patients is one in which we are a team working together toward your goals. While I am here to assist you, I am also here to respect your goals and choices. My journey to therapy My background was in forensics, working mostly with offenders and substance abuse patients. I later shifted to working with first responders, including law enforcement, fire, paramedics, EMS, corrections, communications, and emergency room nurses. Many of these first responders are also active or retired military. I am also a professor and love teaching students in the field of psychology, as we have a great need to help our communities.

Dr. P makes me feel like i won the lottery with her. She really cares, encouraging and straightforward( my kind of person).
I had one session with Dr. Palomino so far. I have enjoyed our conversation and her recommendation and looking forward to our next session.
Dr. P is absolutely one of a kind! I would not be where I am today with out her! She is a constant in my life and I’ll forever be thankful to God and BetterHelp for connecting me with her
Dr. Palomino has been my therapist for the past 9 months. It has been a wonderful journey of self-discovery and growth. I feel I have accomplished more in this short period of time than I have in years. Dr. P's guidance and support have helped me reach a new level of self-awareness and a higher sense of purpose. I have a clear vision of what I'd like my life to be, with new priorities and goals. I feel immensely blessed to have been her patient.
Dr. P was so great to work with. I loved her approach and point of view, it made talking and opening up a lot easier. She really helped me reframe the way I see myself and how I can be a better person not only for me, but for those closest to me.
While I have only had a couple of sessions with Dr. Palomino, her keep it real approach is what I appreciate the most. Deciding to go to therapy is hard enough; however, I find it very easy to talk to Dr. Palomino. I feel heard and understood. She gives great perspective to allow you to see a different way to view your situation while still being supportive. Basically, it’s like having a conversation with a close friend.
Dr. Palomino is a highly skilled therapist with decades of experience. She is a no nonsense, go-getter, cheerleader who makes you feel she is in your corner (and she REALLY is). She really hears you, and is very compassionate. I feel very blessed and lucky to have her as my therapist.
Dr. Palomino is an amazing counselor. I am so lucky to have been matched with her! She takes the time to read my journal entries and gives me great insight on them! I look forward to continue seeing her. She also helps by giving me journal prompts, worksheets, and suggestions to help me get better. Her suggestions are reasonable and I have been able to achieve each one. She does not push too hard, she helps take things slow while still making progress. I love her!
Dr. Palomino is compassionate, caring, and direct in identifying and providing the best treatment. She is always present and attentive. Her expertise is endless in mental health issues especially relating to trauma and childhood traumatic stress.
For the few weeks I have been a patient of Dr. P, I can already see such a huge change in myself. It’s like the calm blanket of safety has been placed over me. I feel guided, safe, understood, and a priority. I’m so thankful to God, who I know picked her just for me. I’m looking forward to more of what her expertise can teach me and help me grow into the healthiest version of myself.
