UpLift Behavioral Health providers do not issue prescriptions for substances controlled by any federal or state agency or other drugs that may be harmful because of their potential for abuse. UpLift Behavioral Health reserves the right to limit the types of medications that may be prescribed by its doctors and nurse practitioners. All prescriptions furnished by UpLift Behavioral Health care providers are issued in accordance with applicable federal and state law as well as UpLift Behavioral Health policy. My counseling approach is relational, warm, and informal. It is broad-based and takes into account all the various influences in a person's life, both past and present. We are all influenced by those around us-family and non-family-as well as our experiences, both good and bad. I work to help a person understand their emotional and relational "DNA" and assist them in rearranging their lives to be more functional. My goal is always emotional health, which I define as the ability to direct one's emotions rather than be directed by them, and the ability to handle stressful situations. I have been doing this work for over 20 years and have been in private practice since 2008. I hold a Master's in Marriage and Family Therapy from Canadian Reformed Theological Seminary.

What should a new client know about working with you?

I am in my sixties and have been doing therapy for individuals, couples, and families for over twenty years. I have been in private practice in Vero Beach Florida since 2008. I joke with my clients that I am going to have a business card made up with the by-line: "Wise Old Guy". Seriously, there is not much I haven't seen. In session I am very relaxed and informal. We are all in this together and doing the best we can. On a more personal note, I am married and have three children from a previous marriage. In my spare time I garden, paint (acrylics) and read like a mad man. I am also addicted to Spotify and have a huge vinyl collection. On a faith note I am not traditionally religious but study the teachings of Jesus and Buddha. In my practice I like to work with people in the context of their particular faith. Finally, I am owned by a small dog named "Lil Bit." I am the Dad you see on You-tube who swore he didn't want a dog but is photographed sleeping on the couch with a dog on his lap. Yes, I'm that guy.

What is your typical process for working with clients?

My graduate work in family systems, which simply means we all come from somewhere. We are all the product of families, relationships, and life events that have molded us into who we are. So, my therapy process is big picture. The first, or second, session consists in getting to know the big picture of your life. We all have a unique story and it is important for your therapist to know that story. We all have a "life dance". Some of the steps are great, some not so great. A good therapist will help you "dance" better. You will hear me talk a lot about emotional health, which should be the goal of all therapy. I define emotional health as the ability to control your emotions instead of your emotions controlling you. In relationships this means the ability to agree to disagree and stay in relationship. Your in charge of who you are. I do not give out home work per se. But I challenge my clients to apply the discussion we had in therapy. Every session you will hear me ask, "How was your week?" that is an intentional question. I tells me whether therapy is working or not. Speaking of working, as a therapist I have to be actually taking you somewhere. You trust me. You're paying me. My commitment is to do all I can to equip you to make the changes you desire. I work hard for all my clients.
