Psychotherapist
VA
I have been characterized as an atypical therapist. Many times, when people I've just met try to guess my occupation, they believe that I must be in construction or some of the building trades. It has been suggested to me that I would be an effective spiritual leader, such as a pastor or other clergy, or even a physician. I myself am in recovery from some childhood experiences as well as the impacts these experiences have had on my life. I feel that much of my experience and observation, both personally and professionally over the years, have been entrusted to me so that I may pass them on for the benefit of others. I am very much an active participant in my life and the lives of those around me. I enjoy learning, fixing things, and creating. I spend as much time outdoors as possible, and growing my own food is very important to me. I have been in practice since 2001 as a licensed counselor, and since 1993 in a variety of unlicensed human services roles. My experiences span the lifespan, starting with elementary-age students and continuing through more senior folks, even those living in long-term care. My work has taken me from hospital emergency rooms to inpatient units, to long-term care facilities, private practice, as well as local government agencies. What I notice most is how much we are alike as human beings, how much the same things confront us, and how the same things also bring us joy and restoration. I earned my MEd in Agency Counseling from the University of Lynchburg, which has further shaped my approach and commitment to this work.

What should a new client know about working with you?

Hello, congratulations on beginning a process whereby you can expect to learn and grow and heal. I am very honored to have been a vital part of this experience for many adult couples and teens. I believe that each of us possesses already much of what we need to heal and grow. I acknowledge that we may have other experiences or information or beliefs or ideas that block us from accessing these strengths and resources already within us. Other times there are skills or assets that need to be learned or brought to bear to move beyond what is causing our distress. It has been my experience that cognitive behavior as well as some experiential strategies are very helpful in a fairly quick fashion when leaving a variety of distress. I MA able to help people access these tools and learn them

More information on payments and coverage

Payment is due after each session and will be charged with your card on file for any portion of patient responsibility. Receipts will be provided at the time of the charge. This typically takes place 2-4 weeks after the session, once your insurance has had a chance to process the claim. We try our best to verify eligibility, but it is ultimately your responsibility to check coverage and out-of-pocket costs for services. For out-of-network visits, you will be billed at the provider’s self-pay rate, and we can provide an invoice for you to submit to your insurance for potential out-of-network reimbursement based on your plan’s benefits.
