Getting to know Carol Erbes

I am an LCSW with over 30 years of counseling and 10 years of supervision experience. I earned my Master's in Social Work from Norfolk State University. I am also an adjunct professor of sociology and criminal justice. My areas of expertise include substance abuse, HIV/AIDS, mental health, parenting and relationships, military issues, and criminal justice. My approaches are cognitive behavioral and person-centered.

What should a new client know about working with you?

As a cognitive behavioral therapist, I do believe that we can change the majority of our behaviors by changing the way we think. I am supportive as well as direct in my approach.

What is your typical process for working with clients?

The initial session is mostly a way of meeting and getting to know each other, to determine is we are a fit. The next step is to evaluate the reasons for coming to therapy utilizing several standardized assessments, such as the Beck and GAD, ADHD, bipolar etc. I do practice talk therapy as I see it as a good way to get things out of our heads, for one thing. Then in doing that we either have to write it down or speak it, which allows us to put things in order rather than to be jumbled up in our heads (which all too often it is I think!) Sessions generally start with finding out how a client's week went and then going on to the issues at hand.
