Getting to know Carolyn Valenzuela

Hi, I'm Carolyn, a licensed therapist based in New York with a private practice dedicated to helping individuals feel more connected, balanced, and empowered. I hold a Master's in Social Work from Adelphi University. My approach is compassionate, respectful, and focused on providing tools that truly work. Using evidence-based models, I'll guide you in understanding how your mind works, helping you heal the wounded and overwhelmed parts of your inner system. Many of my clients share that after just a few sessions, they feel a greater sense of harmony, relief from symptoms, and improved overall functioning. Booking an appointment is easy through Zocdoc. Once you schedule, you'll receive an email from Headway with simple steps to complete before our first session. After those tasks are done, I'll send you a video link for our appointment. Please note that I don't prescribe medication or accept Medicaid at this time. I look forward to supporting you on your journey to healing and growth!

What should a new client know about working with you?

Carolyn is a licensed clinical therapist based in New York who offers a warm, client-centered space for adults seeking to reconnect with themselves, heal emotional wounds, and cultivate more balance, clarity, and self-trust in their lives. With a grounded and compassionate style, Carolyn works with individuals navigating anxiety, relationship challenges, emotional burnout, and the long-term effects of trauma. Many of her clients identify as women who have experienced emotional abuse, codependency, or difficult family dynamics that left them feeling unseen, unworthy, or emotionally overextended. She offers a safe, non-judgmental space to explore these patterns and begin building a healthier, more empowered relationship with oneself. Carolyn draws from several evidence-informed approaches, including Internal Family Systems (IFS)-informed therapy, mindfulness-based strategies, trauma-informed psychotherapy, and psychoeducational tools. She helps clients gain a deeper understanding of their emotional responses by exploring the different “parts” of themselves—whether it’s the anxious part that anticipates rejection, the critical voice that demands perfection, or the protector that avoids vulnerability. With curiosity and care, clients can begin to meet these parts with more compassion and learn to respond to life’s challenges from a place of inner clarity. Carolyn has been supporting clients since 2015 and brings years of experience in helping people move through major life transitions, process grief, explore self-worth and identity, and shift out of survival mode. She believes that therapy is a collaborative space where every part of a person’s experience is welcome—even the messy, confused, or overwhelmed parts. Her approach is present-focused and insight-oriented, with a strong emphasis on helping clients slow down, check in with themselves, and begin meeting their own emotional needs.

What is your typical process for working with clients?

In our work together, you can expect a warm, respectful, and supportive space where you feel truly seen and heard. My goal is to help you feel more grounded, connected to yourself, and clear about what you need. Many people come to therapy feeling overwhelmed, stuck, anxious, or unsure of why certain patterns keep repeating in their lives or relationships. Our sessions are a chance to slow down and gently explore what’s going on beneath the surface. You might notice that part of you feels tired and burned out, while another part pushes you to keep going, or maybe there's a part that feels critical or never satisfied. We’ll make space for all of those feelings without judgment. You don’t have to fix everything at once—instead, we’ll move at your pace, helping you grow more curious and compassionate toward yourself. I draw from Internal Family Systems (IFS), a thoughtful, client-centered approach that helps you build a more understanding relationship with your inner world. You don’t need to know anything about it before coming in—it’s really about learning to listen to yourself in a new way. Each session is guided by what’s most important to you—whether that’s navigating a life transition, working through painful emotions, or just trying to feel a little more like yourself again. I also integrate mindfulness and education about how stress and past experiences shape our patterns.

Carolyn is such an amazing person. Very attentive to details and helped me think outside the box a bit. She always leaves room for my own thoughts and interpretations while we continue to dive into what helps. By far the best therapist I’ve been able to see. Can’t recommended her enough.
