Getting to know Charlie Ruff

Hi there, I'm Charlie! My name is Charlie Ruff (she, her). I am a Licensed Marriage and Family Therapist (38646) who sees individuals and couples via Telehealth. People often experience anxiety and depression regarding their relationships. I enjoy helping clients talk to themselves and their partners about concerns in ways that help de-escalate and create a secure bond. I earned my Master’s in Counseling Psychology from John F. Kennedy University and my Bachelor’s from Texas Tech University. My approach I use Emotionally Focused Therapy, an evidence-based therapy for couples as evaluated by Division 12 of the American Psychological Association (1998 guidelines). My focus I help couples identify the negative cycle in most arguments. We practice new ways of communicating concerns in session so couples and individuals can use them outside of session. As couples get more skilled in discussing reactive feelings, they share more vulnerable feelings, longings, and needs, bringing them closer and enabling a more secure relationship. My communication style I encourage clients to share their experiences rather than criticize, blame, accuse, or give the silent treatment. I do so to foster understanding and empathy for the life experiences that brought each person to the present moment. My journey to mental healthcare I was teaching in a community college writing center and noticed I was most interested in talking with students about life experiences shared in their essays. I found a counseling program and moved to the Bay Area to finish my training. After licensing, I joined a program providing services to military service members and their families on bases in the continental U.S., Europe, Hawaii, and Alaska during the Middle East wars.
