Cheryl Heinla, LMFT

Psychotherapist
CA
Hi there, I'm Cheryl Heinla, a California Licensed Marriage and Family Therapist (LMFT) in the Bay Area. I hold a Master’s in Counseling from John F. Kennedy University. I work with adults, adolescents, and couples. My key areas include anxiety, grief, couples dynamics, family of origin impact, life transitions, relational challenges, and trauma history. My approach I use Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT), trauma-focused, short-term solution-focused methods, and Emotionally Focused Therapy (EFT) with couples. In grief work, I find underlying personal and family dynamics are often key to understanding and healing. My focus I work with adolescents and young adults experiencing anxiety and life transitions, as well as mid-life and beyond facing life transitions, grief, complicated grief, trauma healing, and couples. My communication style I normalize issues as a starting point. I let clients lead with their challenges and goals and collaborate to find a path to understanding and healing. Activities or "homework" often help clients focus on feelings, thoughts, and needs during or between sessions. My journey to therapy I became a therapist later in life after a long career in recruiting and staffing. I found this work with people intimate and interesting, especially psychology’s role. I wanted to work more deeply with individuals. I also have a keen interest in my own family of origin and personal experiences in couples’ work, and why it can be challenging to create and maintain emotionally stable connections. My goals for you It’s important to start with learning and self-awareness of where you are at the beginning of therapy. From there, we can work together to determine where (realistically) you want to be—how you want to feel, function, or make decisions.
