Getting to know Cheryl Swanson

Hi there, I'm Cheryl! I am a Christian therapist who specializes in therapy with adults and parents of children under 12. I have practiced for more than 30 years in a variety of settings with children, teens, and adults. My goal is to work together with you to better understand and resolve the issues causing you distress. I also love giving parents the tools they need to turn behavior problems around and help them enjoy their children again. My approach I prioritize teaching tools to help clients lower their level of distress as we address the traumas or other issues fueling their anxiety/depression. I teach parents behavioral interventions to use at home to change a child’s negative behaviors. My focus My ideal client is someone willing to learn and practice tools that will help them experience less distress, especially while processing traumas. A parent who is motivated to learn interventions and practice them at home will see behaviors change. My communication style I tend to be very calm and ask clarifying questions as you talk so I better understand you. When I am teaching/explaining something, I tend to check often to be sure you understood me. My journey to therapy Like many, successfully working through difficult issues in my own childhood created the desire to help others do the same. I earned a Bachelor’s Degree in Psychology and then a Master’s Degree in Social Work with a specialty in psychotherapy. I am certified in Trauma-Focused CBT. I am trained in two parenting programs which have been very successful. I continue to learn new tools and interventions to share with my clients, especially as science is learning more about the brain. My goals for you Success in treatment means a reduction in anxiety/depression, a lowered response to trauma triggers, and an ability to use tools to self-regulate. With parents, success means they are able to effectively manage their children’s negative behaviors.
