I believe therapy works best when you feel genuinely understood—not judged, analyzed from a distance, or pushed into someone else’s idea of who you should be. My goal is to create a space where you can bring your full self, including the parts that may feel messy, conflicted, uncertain, or difficult to put into words. I work with adults, adolescents, couples, and members of the LGBTQ+ community navigating anxiety, depression, relationship challenges, grief, trauma, identity, life transitions, and the feeling of being stuck despite knowing that something needs to change. I also enjoy working with people in creative and entertainment-related fields, as well as individuals exploring questions of meaning, purpose, family, and belonging. My approach is relational, psychodynamic, and depth-oriented. Rather than focusing only on reducing symptoms, we’ll also get curious about the patterns underneath them—how past experiences, relationships, beliefs, and unconscious dynamics may be shaping your life today. Depending on your needs, I may also draw from attachment theory, Internal Family Systems (IFS), family systems, narrative therapy, dream work, and practical cognitive-behavioral tools. I’m an active and engaged therapist. I’ll listen closely, ask thoughtful questions, offer observations, and help you notice patterns that may be difficult to see from inside your own experience. Therapy with me can include humor, reflection, challenge, and plenty of humanity. You don’t need to arrive knowing exactly what you want to work on. Sometimes the first step is simply recognizing that the way things have been going isn’t working anymore. We can begin there and figure out the rest together.

Getting to know Colin Ebeling

I believe therapy works best when you feel genuinely understood—not judged, analyzed from a distance, or pushed into someone else’s idea of who you should be. My goal is to create a space where you can bring your full self, including the parts that may feel messy, conflicted, uncertain, or difficult to put into words. What should a new client know about working with you?

Clients should know that I’m warm, engaged, curious, and very human in the room. I don’t believe therapy needs to feel stiff or overly clinical. I’ll take your struggles seriously, but there is also room for humor, personality, and genuine connection. Before becoming a therapist, I spent many years working in film and television, so I understand creative careers, high-pressure environments, career transitions, and the sometimes complicated relationship between achievement and fulfillment. My own life experiences have also shaped my interest in relationships, identity, family, adoption, grief, and the many different ways people create meaningful lives. I tend to be an active therapist rather than someone who simply sits back and listens. I’ll ask questions, share observations, help connect dots, and respectfully challenge you when I think it may be useful. At the same time, I believe you are the expert on your own experience, and therapy should move at a pace that feels right for you. Most importantly, you don’t have to perform in therapy with me. You can show up uncertain, frustrated, funny, angry, hopeful, overwhelmed—or not even sure what you’re feeling yet. We can start with whatever is actually there.

What is your typical process for working with clients?

My process begins with getting to know you and understanding what brings you to therapy, what feels difficult right now, and what you hope might be different. Early sessions are also an opportunity for us to get a sense of whether we’re a good fit and to begin identifying patterns, relationships, experiences, or beliefs that may be contributing to what you’re going through. From there, our work becomes collaborative and individualized. We may explore how earlier experiences are showing up in your present relationships, identify recurring emotional or behavioral patterns, work with different parts of yourself that feel in conflict, or develop practical tools for managing anxiety, depression, stress, or difficult situations. I tend to work both in the present moment and at a deeper level. Sometimes that means focusing on an immediate problem; other times it means slowing down and becoming curious about what is underneath it. I may draw from psychodynamic therapy, attachment theory, Internal Family Systems (IFS), family systems, narrative approaches, dream work, and cognitive-behavioral tools depending on what is most useful for you. Throughout therapy, we’ll regularly check in about what is helping, what feels stuck, and whether our work is moving you toward the changes you want. My goal is not simply to help you feel better in the short term, but to help you understand yourself more fully and develop changes that can continue long after therapy ends.
