Getting to know Courtney Carlson

Hi there! My name is Courtney Carlson, and I am a Licensed Marriage and Family Therapist in California. I earned my Master's in Psychology from California State Polytechnic University, Humboldt. Since 2016, I have been providing mental health services to young adults and adults dealing with depression, anxiety, life transitions, stress management, and emotional dysregulation. My approach incorporates CBT, DBT skills, family systems, solution-focused, and humanistic/person-centered methods in my case conceptualization and interventions. I especially enjoy working with transitional-age youth (18-24) and adults, helping clients manage anxiety, depression, and stress, improve coping skills, process life transitions, enhance relationships and communication, and develop better emotional regulation. Three words that describe my communication style are genuine, warm, and humorous. Clients often remark on my ability to help them feel comfortable and safe during sessions. My journey to mental healthcare began as a teenager when I witnessed the transformative and positive impact therapy can have on people's lives. I am passionate about supporting others in overcoming life obstacles and reaching their highest potential. I believe therapy is something I do with clients, not to clients. I am very collaborative in goal setting and monitoring to ensure therapy feels useful and relevant to your concerns. In our first session, I view you as the expert on yourself and your life. We will review informed consent and begin exploring your presenting concerns and background to form an accurate case conceptualization and develop a personalized, relevant treatment plan.
