Courtney Carter, LMFT

Psychotherapist
CA
Hello. My name is Courtney Carter. I am a Licensed Marriage and Family Therapist specializing in supporting young adults, professional women, and African American families and individuals with mental health support, behavioral and emotional concerns, and professionals navigating career and educational changes. My approach is described as inspiring, coaching, and motivating, while also providing a safe, open space to support self-guidance. My approach I use a structured, learning format where psychoeducation, specific steps, and “formulas” are created to help you achieve your goals. I enjoy utilizing Cognitive Behavioral Therapy, Family Systems approaches, Rational Emotive Behavioral Therapy, Brief Solution Focused Therapy, and some Psychodynamic techniques. My focus I particularly enjoy supporting African American professional women managing the emotional stress of career and educational decisions. I also work with young adults transitioning from dependence to independence. My main focus is treating symptoms of anxiety, depression, high stress, mood swings, phobias, panic, and anger. My communication style Depending on your preference, I can create a structured, school-like atmosphere or a relaxed, calming space. Some clients want a secure, structured agenda, while others prefer a free-form environment to explore their feelings. I am comfortable creating both. My journey to mental healthcare I have been providing mental health services since 2010, mostly to adults and children individually, and more recently offering family therapy to low-income and socially marginalized individuals. I currently supervise AMFT, ASW, and APCC students, supporting them in earning their therapy licenses. My interest in mental health began while working at a Women’s Clinic, where I encountered the challenge of addressing “invisible” needs.
