Cristal Java, LMHC

Psychotherapist
120 Pear St NE, Olympia, WA
I am currently accepting new clients. It is a strange and painful time, politically, financially, and emotionally. I don’t pretend to have all the answers, but I can help with healing, transformation and hope. To achieve lasting results, I alternate between conscious work/talk therapy and depth work/subconscious (EMDR/Lifespan Integration). I am direct, compassionate, and persistent. The stories we tell ourselves shape and color our every experience. We can accept, lovingly adjust, re-story, bring ourselves alive again, with support. Traumatic, systematic, and abuse wounds are often beyond language. They can be healed without voicing private details. Techniques: EMDR, Lifespan Integration, Somatics, IFS informed, Feminist/Anti-Oppression, Narrative/Story Telling, Play/Expressive, CBT/DBT, walking , and Mindful Self-Compassion. I offer support for PTSD/trauma, anxiety/depression, neglect, relationships, communication, and estrangements. I address work stress/bullying, racism identity/mixed/first-gen issues, political/world feelings of doom/helplessness, climate anxiety, generational trauma, and loneliness. I often work with activists, unionists, and those in 'caring/healing' fields- teachers, nurses, etc. I love being a therapist. My goal is to help folks fall in love with themselves. To trust, be sweet to, and to hold oneself accountable with compassion instead of shame. I believe in liberation and hope. It brings me alive to help folks get free from internal & external bondage. I worked in the labor movement for 15 years before becoming a therapist. This informs my approach.

What should a new client know about working with you?

I am warm, compassionate, and direct. I am an active listener, but I do much more than "just listen", I do provide feed back and direction, if desired. I use humor. I adapt. I begin by holding an initial session to check for therapeutic rapport and fit. The greatest predictor of therapeutic success is the connection between the person and their therapist. I always check for this. Each person is unique and needs an personalized approach, I frequently ask for feedback in order better attune. I begin with an assessment and co-designed treatment plan. We adapt as necessary. My office is small and intimate. I offer in person as well teleme sessions. EMDR is most effective/ best in person. I suggest meeting weekly for a month or two while care is being established. After that, many clients switch to every other week. Welcome.

What is your typical process for working with clients?

I typically alternate between traditional “talk therapy” and depth work (Lifespan/EMDR, etc) sessions. I believe we need both to fully heal. I prefer to work in person, when possible. Talk therapy helps us understand ourselves, uncover connections/strengths, and make new meanings. Depth work helps with nebulous emotional flashbacks and unwanted patterns/ behaviors. I believe that we need both. I meet clients where they are on a given day. We may have had plans to address a memory, but a recent life event needs to be addressed instead. My typical opening question is "What do you want to work on today?" Often, people experience noticeable positve changes within the first few visits.
