Getting to know Cynthia Holloway

Cynthia Holloway Independent Marriage and Family Therapist Hello, I’m Cindy. I’m a master’s-prepared, independently licensed Marriage and Family Therapist. I earned my master’s degree in Marriage and Family Therapy from Butler University and completed my bachelor’s degree at Ball State University. I look forward to helping individuals as they work to heal and develop skills that will help them help themselves. My approach I like to meet people where they are with regard to the symptoms and issues they bring to therapy. I am partial to Rogerian theories and the need to provide impartiality and positive regard for others. My foundation includes thinking in terms of systems, especially family systems, and how those systems may influence us. I believe change can be difficult but not impossible. My focus Currently, my practice consists of individual adults. Often, these folks are navigating a significant life transition and/or working through trauma from the past that seems to interfere with current life experiences and well-being. Disorders these individuals bring with them include depression, anxiety, various identity issues, and post-traumatic stress. My communication style I have been told by past clients that they feel like they can say what they need to say in session without the fear of being judged. I encourage the client’s empowerment wherever I can. My journey to therapy I first became drawn to psychology and human behavior while I was still a student in high school. When I began my undergraduate degree, I experienced a very powerful event which prompted me to change my major to psychology. After gaining some life experience, I returned to complete a master’s degree in education with a focus in Marital and Family Therapy. I have had the great fortune to witness individuals transform their lives as they actively participate in mental health therapy, and that’s what keeps me motivated to continue practicing.

I saw Cynthia 3-4 times. General lack of empathy and warmth, and seems not to care about what’s going on in your life. Since I hadn’t made progress on my severe depression (complicated by PTSD, ADHD, and health problems) in the span of a few weeks, she dropped me. In our last session I’d had a horrible week, and instead of empathizing and helping me work through that, she stopped mid-session, told me she’s terminating our therapy due to lack of progress, and that I should find another therapist. I wasn’t rude, just described my week and my failures, which I was already embarrassed about, as well as a short list of concrete things I’d like to work on over the next week. And one of the things I told her was that my boyfriend’s dad nearly died and is fighting for his life after emergency heart surgery and a blood infection! How she feels terminating therapy was an appropriate response to all that blows my mind. No wonder she has so much availability.
