My name is Cynthia Kemp, LPC I currently work as a licensed practitioner of the healing arts at a mental health clinic, where I have been for the last four years I have six years of clinical experience and have worked in Intensive Outpatient Program (IOP) and Partial Hospitalization Program (PHP) settings In addition, I have 16 years of experience working with students with disabilities such as Learning Disabilities, Emotional Disturbance, ADHD, and Intellectual and Developmental Disabilities (IDD) My educational journey includes earning a Master’s in Counseling from Prairie View A&M University While teaching special education, I pursued this degree and completed an internship in various settings, including IOP and PHP My approach My approach is nonjudgmental and accepting of all individuals I work with as we build an alliance to collaborate I recognize that each person is unique, so I adjust treatment to fit their individual needs I practice from several models depending on the client’s needs The most common approaches I use include Cognitive Behavioral Therapy, Motivational Interviewing, Solution-Focused Therapy, Person-Centered Therapy, and Supportive Therapy My focus I have not found my ideal client yet My communication style I strive to communicate directly, clearly, and positively to help confirm treatment goals, encourage progress, and provide feedback When communicating with clients, my tone is optimistic, my manner is positive, and active listening helps me draw out important details My journey to therapy My educational experience in the classroom led me to therapy I was a Special Education Teacher for 16 years, working with various disabilities I found great joy in working with special needs children but felt the need to explore another direction After researching, I pursued becoming a Licensed Professional Counselor, building on my Master’s in Counseling earned while teaching.
