What should a new client know about working with you?

In order for us to do meaningful work, I have to earn your trust. I create a warm, non-judgmental environment for clients of all backgrounds to explore their emotional and mental health. I am inclusive, affirming, and committed to cultural humility. Beyond listening, I have questions, comments, and observations that may help us dig deeper to understand the problem more fully. My desire is to understand who you are and what is going on under the surface so we can deal with the root of your challenges. I am considered a trauma-focused therapist, which means I believe the symptoms you're experiencing are a result of painful experiences you've endured. Our minds are powerfully adaptive and go to great lengths to protect us from the pain and keep us as functional as possible, but these coping strategies can become problematic. These painful emotions lurk outside of your awareness, but show up in your life through any number of dysfunctional behaviors or mental health conditions. Additionally, early childhood experiences create foundational patterns of interacting with the world and others, and I seek to explore how these patterns might contribute to your current problems and life dissatisfaction. This process increases insight about how you might be trying to satisfy unmet needs and protect your vulnerable parts through your current behavior. Creating awareness around these patterns will allow you to do the necessary emotional healing and enable you to disentangle from unhelpful behaviors and make more intentional choices. This isn't easy and it isn't a quick fix, but in the end you will experience freedom and will have a greater sense of integrity and authenticity. Sometimes clients may benefit from more intensive help to overcome difficult or traumatic experiences. EMDR (Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing) is a powerful tool I incorporate to bring healing and closure to those wounds. All therapy services are available in person or by telehealth.

What is your typical process for working with clients?

In order to understand your background and the history of your situation, it's important that we do a thorough intake. This means I'll have a lot of questions to ask during our first session. A typical session may begin by exploring something upsetting that happened during the week or possibly picking up where we left off the previous week. It's important to me that we maintain flexibility to address the needs that feel most important to you when you come into the session. Typically I ask a lot of questions to help us gain understanding about the meaning you're making from the situation or I may make observations about how it relates to other experiences we've discussed. Our time together will be conversational and interactive.
