Getting to know Darby Walton

Darby Walton is a licensed professional counselor in Mississippi and Florida and a National Certified Counselor, based in Madison and seeing clients by video in both states. She has over a decade of clinical practice and works with adolescents 13 and older and adults on complex trauma, attachment wounds, and the relationship patterns that grow out of both. Complex trauma is often ongoing rather than a single event, so there may be no one memory to point to. Darby is EMDR Level II Trained and uses Internal Family Systems and ego-state approaches alongside polyvagal and somatic regulation, methods that work with patterns and parts rather than one memory at a time. EMDR is paced deliberately, with preparation before any reprocessing. Her practice includes trauma-informed care for survivors of intimate partner violence and for co-occurring substance use, built on years of addiction work in residential, drug court, and outpatient settings. The trauma and the coping get addressed together. She also treats eating disorders at an outpatient level and coordinates with higher levels of care when that is what someone needs. Darby is affirming of LGBTQIA+, non-monogamous, and kink-diverse clients. Your identity and relationship structure are context, not something to justify before you get to what you came in for. She also works with anxiety, depression, dissociation, codependency, shame, and family conflict. She is currently completing her LPC-S training. Approaches include EMDR, IFS, attachment-based therapy, CBT, DBT, ACT, Motivational Interviewing, and mindfulness-based therapy. For clients under 18, a parent or guardian is part of the intake. Your first visit is a full intake session. Sessions are held by secure video, and you need to be located in Mississippi or Florida at the time of your appointment.

What should a new client know about working with you?

You do not need to have a clear story or a single event to explain. Many people I work with say nothing specific happened, it was just like that, and that is a real starting point. You also do not have to tell me everything in the first session. I will not rush you into processing hard memories. We start by building steadiness and learning what your body does under stress, and we only move into deeper trauma work when you are ready. You can pause or stop at any point. Whatever your identity, relationships, or history with substances or food, you will not have to defend it here.

What is your typical process for working with clients?

The first few sessions focus on getting to know you, what brings you in, and building tools to help your nervous system settle when things get hard. From there we set goals together. Most clients meet with me weekly at first. Depending on what you are working on, I use EMDR, Internal Family Systems and ego-state work, and somatic and polyvagal approaches, along with CBT, DBT, and ACT skills. If substance use or eating concerns are part of the picture, we work on them alongside the trauma rather than one after the other. We check in regularly on what is helping, and if you need a higher level of care, I will help you get connected to it.

Out-of-pocket fees and assistance
Initial session: $150 for 50 minutes
Ongoing session: $150 for 50 minutes
  • Sliding scale: Offers lower out-of-pocket fees on an individual basis, typically based on your ability to pay
  • Files your insurance claim: You pay the session fee upfront and the provider files the claim for you, so you can get reimbursed directly without worrying about the paperwork
  • Charges post-reimbursement amount: This provider will only charge you for the amount you pay after you get reimbursed from your insurance plan, so you don’t need to pay the session fee upfront

More information on payments and coverage

Within 24 hours of booking, please provide your insurance information and a payment card to keep on file. For clients under 18, this comes from a parent or guardian. We use your insurance details to verify your benefits before your first session. If we do not receive both in that time, we may not be able to confirm your appointment. Once verified, we will let you know what to expect for copays, coinsurance, or deductibles. You are responsible for any amount your plan does not cover. We can only bill the plans listed on this profile. If your plan is not listed, please choose self-pay or another provider. Medicare and Medicaid plans are not accepted for this provider. Self-pay is available, and reduced rates may be offered based on financial need. Cancellations with less than 48 hours' notice are considered late cancellations. Late cancellations and missed appointments are charged to the card on file and cannot be billed to insurance.

I was realy tired of just trying to talk it all out and for once she had ways of working on things that weren't just talking.
I've been seeing Darby for over a year and it's been great. I was worried about starting therapy but am so glad I did.
I just got started with Darby but it was quick and easy and I am having a good experience so far.
love her! she is so smart and just seems to get it. I always look forward to our sessions
Very nice but also direct which I really need sometimes
She is super smart, I always feel like I am learning and understanding myself better. If you're worried about getting started, I would say just go for it.
She is reliable and easy to work with. I haven't had any issues using insurance with her or scheduling which is unusual based on my prior experiences.
I wish I had found her earlier but and happy to have found her at all. I have been to therapy several times and even tried EMDR before but its worked much better with her and I really feel a big difference finally.
I have worked with Darby for a long time now and been able to stick with her through moves and new jobs and new insurances and I have heard that is pretty rare. I appreciate her flexibility.
Darby has helped me feel safe in my body for the first time in a long time and although the work can be heard, its been completely worth it too.
She made therapy feel easy and natural for the first time. I don't feel like I have to work hard to explain things to her and am just thankful to have found her.
