Darryl Gilmer, LMFT

Psychotherapist
CA
I am a licensed marriage and family therapist in California and Texas, working with couples and individuals. I earned my Master’s in Psychology from Chapman University, which laid the foundation for my clinical approach. My specialties include couples therapy, depression, anxiety, and trauma. For couples, I often draw from John Gottman’s theories; for individuals, I utilize Narrative Therapy. When addressing trauma, I use Cognitive Processing Therapy (CPT), a systematic and brief intervention. Although CPT focuses on specific objectives, I continue to provide a safe and supportive space for clients who wish to stay connected with the therapeutic process. Above all, as a marriage and family therapist, I emphasize the importance of relationships in healing—including the relationship between my clients and me. I work with a diverse range of clients and feel best equipped to treat depression, anxiety, trauma, life stressors, career transitions, and couples, including same-sex couples. My communication style is friendly and welcoming. I strive to create comfort by smiling often and giving clients my full attention as they share their stories. I also believe laughter, when appropriate, can be a powerful tool for healing. My journey to mental healthcare has been unconventional. Growing up in inner-city Detroit, I developed a passion for classical music and the flute, initially pursuing a music degree in college. After two years, I joined the Marine Corps, serving four years in the band before an honorable discharge. I then explored various careers—truck driving, mechanics, restaurant management, and corporate security. Considering using my VA benefits to study Spanish and become a translator, I was advised that the VA would only fund education enhancing my employability. A career aptitude test suggested therapy as a potential field, leading me to where I am today.
