Getting to know David Nielsen

Hi there, I'm David! I have over eight years of experience working in a number of mental health settings, from emergency rooms to inpatient acute hospitals to outpatient clinics. In that time, I have come to believe that therapy can truly be a transformative experience for those who want to make a change in their lives. I earned my Master's in Social Work from Louisiana State University and have dedicated my professional career to helping adults function better in their professional, social, and personal relationships. My approach My goal as a therapist is to provide a safe place where you can feel comfortable sharing things that you wouldn't normally share. I typically practice Cognitive Behavioral Therapy and Motivational Interviewing; however, I individualize my approach based on clients' needs. My focus I generally work with clients who suffer from depression, anxiety, relationship issues, behavioral issues, codependency, and life transitions. My communication style I will work to let your story unfold. I will clarify important events and issues that have shaped your life and provide you with the tools to resolve those past issues in order to live a healthier life in the present. My journey to therapy I began my journey as a Social Worker in 2013, working in a homeless shelter in southern Louisiana. Over the years, I have worked in a variety of healthcare settings, including emergency rooms, outpatient clinics, inpatient acute psychiatric hospitals, and outpatient therapy clinics. A major theme I have observed across the healthcare spectrum is an unfortunate lack of access to mental health care. This was especially evident in my position as an Administrator overseeing Outpatient Mental Health services in a rural area. A combination of lack of access, availability, and stigma surrounding mental health services results in many people going without help even when it's sorely needed.
