What should a new client know about working with you?

In my opinion, therapy is at its best when there is a strong therapeutic relationship between the therapist and the client. In today's fast paced and often very impersonal healthcare world, it is imperative to me that each client I work with feel that they are talking with someone who is truly invested in understanding and helping them in their journey. I also am of the philosophy that life is a work in progress for all of us, self-included. I have often found that many people even needlessly avoid therapy for years out of fear of being judged or intimidated by what it may entail. I don't believe that therapy needs to be scary or intimidating. People are often far more insightful regarding their challenges then they may even realize. However, the demands of our day lives with work, family, school, etc., often result in most of us not feeling that we have the time or opportunity to focus on ourselves and make changes. Many continue to put forth a great deal of energy to meet all those demands within all these roles, and simply just hope that one day things might improve. However, this does not need to be the case. Often in spending even just a few hours a month talking with someone who can provide you a setting where your focus can be on whatever YOU need, many people are able to restore perspective in their lives, recognize and better utilize their strengths, and find evidenced based approaches to help them finally make the changes they had hope for in their lives.

What is your typical process for working with clients?

When first booking with a new client, I will usually ask to contact them via phone to obtain some basic information about them and their situation. I do this to make sure that I can adequately meet their needs (availability, frequency of appointments, areas of expertise) and to ensure they are comfortable before moving forward in the process. Even in the event that I may not be able to meet their needs, I am more than willing to offer recommendations or other providers who would be better suited to do so. If we do plan to move forward in working together, I will usually ask them for their email address so that I can send them more information on my practice, guidelines, and ask them to complete some additional brief forms to better help me understand what they have been struggling with and what they are hoping to achieve during our time together. I then usually like to schedule the first 2 initial sessions for 60 minutes each, 1 week apart. I do this so that I can spend a fair amount of time quickly getting to know the individual's situation and offer timely support. Subsequent sessions are typically 45-50 minutes, but certainly can be flexible depending on the client's needs and scheduling availability. After the initial sessions, I ask client's what they prefer for frequency of sessions and focus, with many choosing weekly or bi-weekly sessions early on. This of course can be adjusted at any time, should the need arise for a client. If you feel that I might be a good fit for you, I would be happy to hear from you! Please feel free to schedule with me and let me know when a good time would be to contact you for a brief call prior to our appointment date.
