“When I read David’s bio, I could tell he was thoughtful and introspective. I am similar, so I knew he would have a better understanding than most about how I think, feel, and communicate. He is very intelligent and an amazing listener. He provides thoughtful responses and is always authentic. His perspective has helped me see my world from the outside in and that has given me a lot of clarity.”

Getting to know David Volker

Hi! I’m a licensed psychotherapist (LPCC) based in Berkeley CA and serving clients statewide via Telehealth. I have over 20 years of experience working and volunteering in community mental health, and have been practicing as a psychotherapist since January 2018. I received my MA in Integral Counseling Psychology from the California Institute of Integral Studies (CIIS) in 2019, and my BA in Psychology from Reed College in 2010. I have been licensed since February 2023. I am trained as an integrative psychotherapist and work relationally and holistically. I believe all facets of life are interrelated-relational, physical/physiological, emotional, cognitive, cultural, societal/political, spiritual, existential. I incorporate from a wide range of approaches, including attachment-based, somatic, humanistic, mindfulness, ACT, DBT, CBT, existential, systems, and holistic/spiritual frameworks, as well as insights from neuroscience, the Gottmans, social justice perspectives, and intergenerational trauma work. I am guided by a trauma-informed approach that aims to foster empowering client-centered, collaborative, transparent and intersubjective relational conditions that I believe support people’s natural ability to experience safety, connection, and authentic actualization. My work is informed by a lifetime of deep inquiry into human needs and the complex ways familial, social, cultural, economic and biological contexts inform how they may be nurtured, supported, neglected or actively or insidiously contravened. I believe that human attachments and early life experiences, as well as structural power dynamics in social/societal systems, are typically foundationally informative to the bridge or gap between trauma/suffering and thriving in safety and connection.

More information on payments and coverage

Payment is due after each session and will be charged with your card on file for any portion of patient responsibility. Receipts will be provided at the time of the charge. This typically takes place 2-4 weeks after the session, once your insurance has had a chance to process the claim. We try our best to verify eligibility, but it is ultimately your responsibility to check coverage and out-of-pocket costs for services. For out-of-network visits, you will be billed at the provider’s self-pay rate, and we can provide an invoice for you to submit to your insurance for potential out-of-network reimbursement based on your plan’s benefits.

I don't feel judged by him. David seem to sincerely care about my mental and emotional state. He comes across as very caring and compassionate. I'm disappointed that I will be losing my Kaiser insurance at the end of this month. As I would of loved the opportunity to learn more and develope a good relationship with him. I hadnt been able to find a therapist previously at Grow until now with David. My first therapist within the group was absolutely unprofessional and David is the opposite. Wish I would of scheduled with him long ago. Please let him know that I think he is a great fit for anyone facing the same struggles as I do.
