Getting to know Deanna Wong

Hi there, I'm Deanna! I grew up around Los Angeles/San Gabriel Valley during a time when therapy was not widely known and mental health was stigmatized. As an Asian American woman of immigrant parents, I've gained insight into the systemic barriers and common problems faced by marginalized groups such as limited access to quality care, limited awareness of mental illnesses, loss of identity, perfectionism, inner critic, and imposter syndrome. I would like to help my clients improve their lives through therapy. I earned my Master’s in Marriage and Family Therapy from Alliant International University, San Diego, and hold a Bachelor’s degree from the University of California, Irvine. These educational experiences, along with my work in non-profit agencies and school-based therapy across different districts, have deepened my commitment to supporting marginalized communities. My approach I like to build rapport with my clients first so that they are comfortable before addressing deeper topics. I specialize in Cognitive Behavioral Therapy and am solution-focused, addressing intergenerational and historical trauma when needed. I also incorporate Dialectical Behavior Therapy techniques. My focus I am passionate about helping diverse marginalized populations, young adults, and teens because I believe these groups are often unseen and struggling with depression, anxiety, low self-esteem, and life transitions. Asian Americans from immigrant families hit close to home! My communication style I communicate with a soft, calming tone. I often use light-hearted humor and encouragement, and I am genuinely open and direct. I practice active listening and like to be reflective in the telehealth room to encourage my clients’ self-reflection. My journey to therapy The lack of mental health resources available to my community led me into this field..
