Getting to know Diane Shapson

I am originally from Northern NJ and have been in DC since 2008. The Park View area in DC is where I call home and has been a pivotal place of change and growth in my life. My interests outside of work include spending time with my dog Lola, staying active, and traveling. I enjoy connecting with people while maintaining a good balance of self-care and personal time. I am a Licensed Professional Counselor (LPC) in the District of Columbia and certified by the National Board for Certified Counselors. I earned a Master’s degree in Clinical Mental Health Counseling from The George Washington University and hold a Bachelor of Science degree in Management and Psychology from Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute in Troy, NY. My clinical experience includes working with adults with chronic and persistent mental illness in non-profit and group home settings, as well as providing one-on-one counseling at a community counseling center. For the past nine years, I have worked in private practice, offering individual therapy to adults from diverse backgrounds with a variety of presenting concerns. My counseling style combines cognitive behavioral therapy and reality therapy, grounded in a person-centered and multicultural approach. I believe no two people are alike and that everyone experiences stressors uniquely. Therapy sessions are client-directed, while I provide guidance, support, techniques, and clinical insight into the client’s experience. My role is to foster a strong therapeutic relationship through empathy, genuineness, and positive regard to empower individuals in their healing and growth.
