Don Ross, LMFT

Psychotherapist
CA
Hi there, I'm Don! My name is Don Ross, and I’m a Licensed Marriage and Family Therapist with a Master’s in Humanistic Psychology from Sonoma State University. I specialize in couples therapy but also work with individuals. Most people who seek therapy are facing some sort of crisis, meaning their current stresses and challenges exceed their present resources and skills. My approach I view the problems we face as messages telling us that our ways of coping that worked in the past need updating: we’re being invited to grow. Rather than proof that there’s something wrong with us, our problems shine a light on areas of life where we simply need to learn new skills and ways of being. We all want to be “normal,” but all evidence suggests that a truly happy and healthy person is rare. Rather, most of us simply didn’t receive the care and guidance required to prepare us for a full and rich life, and that is why the field of psychotherapy exists. My focus Currently, I am preparing for certification in Emotionally Focused Therapy (EFT) for Couples (see iceeft.com), which I was first trained in 2007. EFT has proven to be the most effective approach for couples and also involves skills that help individuals. It is based on the new “science of love:” how human beings connect and bond with each other; what breaks connection; and how to repair those breaks when they occur. I believe that love is the central need all humans have in order to experience happiness and well-being—especially now, in these times of Covid. My communication style More than anything, I make it my purpose to create a sense of safety, acceptance, and partnership with my clients. I view healing and growth as a life-long journey, which I am also on. I try to be as real as I can with my clients, knowing from experience that direct and honest feedback from the therapist is crucial for healing.
