Getting to know Edwina Island

Hi there, I'm Edwina! I am a Licensed Marriage and Family Therapist (LMFT) based in the Sacramento Region, working with clients statewide via telehealth. I earned my Master’s in Psychology and Counseling from Chapman University, which laid the foundation for my passion in mental health. My approach My therapeutic approach varies depending on each person’s needs; however, I most frequently use Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT) and Emotionally Focused Therapy (EFT). Although these two are distinctively different, it really depends on your personal mental health goals and current condition. There’s no right or wrong way to get therapy. CBT might be a good fit if you prefer a more structured, practical approach, while EFT might be more suitable if you want to dive deeper into your emotional experiences. My focus I have found that my approach and style are a good fit for adults dealing with anxiety, life transitions, and stress. I have worked with first responders and their family members, adolescents, and individuals with substance use disorders. I also have experience supporting domestic violence survivors and victims of human trafficking. Additionally, I have been fortunate to work on a biblical counseling team within my community, serving those struggling with their faith. My communication style My communication style is direct yet compassionate. I want my clients to feel comfortable sharing personal challenges while being open to feedback. My journey to mental healthcare My journey to becoming a therapist was not planned. I have been a "helper" all my life, and after a career in law enforcement, I decided to return to school to serve others in a more therapeutic environment. I have worked in my church and community, helping others become the best version of themselves.

I was matched through my insurance. Since the first session, I've connected with Edwina. She's great at listening as well as asking the right questions to dig deeper. The homework she gives really fits each situation we are discussing and helps me continue the work outside of our sessions.
